Azure VM restore - availability set not "restored"

Hello everybody,

I've been attending the MS20533c course but no material seems to mention it and the trainer doesn't know it.

We've been backing up the VMs in order to understand the restore process. The VM I restored is a Windows VM member of an availability set together with other Vmachines of the same type.

The VM, storage account and the resource group are all located in the same region: "West EU" but when I restore the VM, this is properly restored but it is not member of the availability set anymore.
Now, I'd actually need the machine to be member of the availability set to have the Azure sla of 99,95% of availability respected but I am not able to do it, event trying to add it later in, the message reads:

"The availability set can only be configured when creating a virtual machine. You must recreate the virtual machine to move it in or out of an availability set."

Accordingly to this article I should be able to do it instead: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-windows-classic-configure-availability/

it would be rwally sad not to be able to restore tha availability set settings especially when the VMs I'll be working on are production machines.

Can you please explain how it actually works?

many thanks for your help

Stefano
