Backup VM running SQL

I'm testing a VM which has SQL Server on it.  There are two drives: The OSDisk as drive C and a larger DataDisk as drive F.

The SQL database (and other things) reside on drive F and the SQL database is currently about 15 GB.

If I set up a VM backup, does this cover the F drive and the SQL database it contains too? Or do I have to create a separate backup for the SQL backup? (and maybe the F drive too.)

I'm trying to understand the scope of the "Instant Restore" feature.
