Viewing Backup

Currently using Windows Server Backup to backup drives to Azure. However I cannot find a way to view these backup sets in Azure Portal.

All I can see is the last backup job GBs. Is there anyway to look at these backups to make sure everything is being backed up correctly? I've trawled through the portal with no luck, this seems like such a simple task?

Thanks in advance.

Backing up Windows 2019 Server "CORE" with Azure Backup

Hello,

I watched a Microsoft Ignite session on Azure Backup from September 2018 where they explained 'no agents' are required to back Server 2019 desktop experience (GUI version), as 'Windows Administrative Center'  has APIs which hook into Azure Backup (so no additional agents need be installed like the MARS agent for example.

The video then said we also support Server 2019 Core, but because there is no GUI you need to configure via a WEB browser (presumably remotely from the Windows Core server). In other words again you do not need to install and agent, presumably because event though the Windows Administrative Center GUI is not present the DLLs/APIs to hook into Azure backup are?

However, I cannot find any further information on the above subject, can any one elaborate and point me to  links showing how to backup an on-premise Windows 2019 Core server to Azure Backup preferable without any agents

Thanks

Can not restore our data

We are backing up our fil share data from Windows Server 2008R2 with Azure Backup  two times a day. One PC got infected with a crypto-virus and all the common shares got encrypted. We have isolated it to this computer and taken it offline. All we need to do now is to restore the original data from Azure. We have been using this solution for years and restore have never been a problem in the past. We are using the latest Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent 2.0.9169.0 available in the portal.

(I can not put the link in before my account is verified, but it is a screen dump of the Recovery Job Failed pop up)

Microsoft Azure Backup was unable to complete the operation in the allotted time.

Wait a few minutes and then try the operation again. If the issue persist,

please contact Microsoft Support (0x1FBDF)

We have tried this on the original server and on a separate Windows 10 PC.

We have access to the service and can browse the restore points.

When we select the restore point from just before infection, it works for about 40 to 90 minutes and fails.

We have tried both full and partial restore. The partial restore will sometime mount the drive, but it is not accessible.

The backups keeps going with no errors. Fortunately we have 60 days retention.

Where do I go from here?

Azure BAckup on Prem

We are planning to use Azure Backup Server on prem to protect on prem VMware infra which had databses and application.

The idea is to create on prem copy and duplicate in cloud. the question I have is:

1. We have a NAS device which we want o use to use as a backup repository on prem. Can I use NAS device and use it  with azure backup server as a backup repository?

2. I dont have a domain on prem or AD domain controller. Does Azure backup server requires AD to be used? can I backup my Vmware VM without domain joining ABS as I dont have any domain?

quick recovery for huge Volume (VM)

Hello,

I have tested VM disaster data recovery from backup vault in to new VM (DS5v2), 2TB data size,  4Million files - and am disapointed.

It took more that 12hours until all data is recovered, initial enumeration task alone took 3-4 hours. It's too long for disaster recovery szenarios

I know there are some possibilities with data replication and snapshots etc. and this is something we absolutaly will do ,

but my question here is just about - is it possible to speed up a full VM recovery from a backup vault  (all inside azure), with huge volumes and many files on it (1 to  20 TBytes, millions of files (1M-10M)) - to complete it in few hours?

Thank you & Regards

Questions on Azure backup software...

Hi everyone,

Hope you can help or share your usage experience on the Azure backup software...

A consultant helped us just setup a Azure backup and install the backup software on our server, which has 400Gb disk space, so that we can  backup the data to the cloud. The test backup job on the couple small servers worked fine.

Yesterday we try to setup a backup job on a server with terabytes data on it. During the process of setting up the "Protection" or the backup job for the file server, I got an error saying my backup server does not have sufficient space for the backup job... WHen I went back up some steps on where there two check boxes to select "Online protection" and "Short term protection" (which require to store on the local disk"... I could not deselect the last option if I select the "Online protection".

So if I want to backup the data to the cloud, anyway it can bypass the local disk storage and go straightly to the cloud?

I'm getting the message "Microsoft Azure Backup has encountered an internal error" (0x1fbde). The error occurs after the transfer completes (13.18 MB). I've reinstalled the backup agent (2.0.9153.0) and even created a new Recovery Vault.

The encryption passphrase for this server is not set. Please configure an encryption passphrase

Can someone please help me with the following,

I have a on-premise Windows 2019 Server Core computer  (not GUI)

I am testing Azure Backup (e.g. proof of concept)

I created a new Azure Recovery Fault, and following the following documentation to on-board my on-premise server to Azure Backup https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-client-automation

I created a System State backup policy and schedule following the above advice, when I look in the Azure Portal I see the system state backup failed with the following error

The encryption passphrase for this server is not set. Please configure an encryption passphrase.

Ensure that the encryption passphrase is configured properly.

OK, the message seems quite clear, by problem is I can only find documentation on how to create a new encryption passphrase on the client (server being backed up) using the GUI (i.e. the MARS agent GUI interface).  I am on Windows Server 2019 Core, therefore I do not have a GUI and cannot run the MARS agent MMC GUI for example. Therefore I looked for a PowerShell cmdlet that may help e.g. get-command *-OB*  but could not find any cmdlets which would allow me to create the passphrase (unless the modules are badly named and the one I need is there).

Anyway, can someone please advise how I can fix this issue on Windows Server Core

Thanks

Where can I find logs or reports for backup jobs of SQLServer in Azure VM backups configured in Azure Recovery Services Vault

$

I need to be able to pull reporting or logs of all the backup attempts for SQL Server in Azure VM jobs configured in Azure Recovery Services Vault.  I have already configured email alerts.  However, for SOC 2 requirements we need to be able to pull a log of all backup jobs and their outcome.

I've checked the Power BI app that shows Azure Backups, but database backups are not included.

Use Azure Cosmos DB Migration Tool to export from Azure Table API to json

Hello,

I want to migrate the data from Cosmos Table API to a json file.

I have copied the PRIMARY CONNECTION STRING from the portal and this is the command I am trying to run:

dt.exe /s:DocumentDB /s.ConnectionString:"PRIMARY CONNECTION STRING" /s.Collection:application /t:JsonFile

OR:

dt.exe /s:DocumentDB /s.ConnectionString:"PRIMARY CONNECTION STRING;Database=TablesDB" /s.Collection:application /t:JsonFile

and I receive this error:

Critical error: DocumentDB account end-point URL should be provided as part of the connection string

What am I missing?

Backup failed because subscription has expired

Hello, I upgraded my free account to pay-as-you-go subscription a few hours too late but was still able to backup just before I upgraded. The subscription status shows active on the portal and it has been for more than 5  hours now. I have re-registered the server with the latest Microsoft azure recovery agent(on a windows server 2019 standard)  twice already using vault credentials freshly downloaded from the portal and the right passphrase.  I'm still getting the "Backup failed because your Microsoft Azure subscription has expired. Please renew your Azure subscription to continue backing up successfully"

I have been searching for hours now and the only fix mentioned is re-registering the server which I already did twice. The registration resumed completely both times with no errors and I'm able to mount and read recovery points with no issue.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated on this matter.

Thanks in advance.

Retention policies doubt

Hi

I have a doubt, i have MARS installed and i configured a retention policy of 7 days, ¿ what will happen the day 8 with the FULL BACKUP taken the first day and that it is supposed to be deleted because of the configuration of the retention policy?

I want to explain myself better, i know that the first backup is a FULL backup of all the information and the others are INCREMENTAL backups. If i define a retention policy of 7 days, what will happen the DAY 8 with the FULL BACKUP, when it is supposed that the oldest backup (in this case the FULL Backup) will be deleted.

¿ I will lose the BACKUP FULL taken the first day ?. If the answer is yes ¿ What will happen with all the others incremental backup wich depends on it ?

Thanks in advance

Azure Backup Configuration failed

Hi,

I have had Server Essentials 2012 on a physical machine backing up to Azure for a number of years now without issue. But as the server itself was becoming old I decided to build a new machine. This time however I have used Hyper V Core 2019, then added Server Essentials 2016 (needed remote web access) as a virtual machine.

The server is all working ok other than the Azure Backup. If I use the Essentials Dashboard to 'Register this server for backup', i create a new Backup Vault, then click next I get an error.

'An unknown error occured. To troubleshoot the issue, view the event log for additional details, and then see Troubleshoot Microsoft Azure Backup. Error code:80040280.'

I can not see anything in the event logs relating to this. I have tried disabling the firewall but still get the same issue.

DPM protection group online backups no showing up in Azure

Hello,

I have MS DPM 2012 R2 and have configured the MARS agent, Azure vault credentials, and subscription in the DPM Management Console. My protection group successfully backs up to Azure online protection. However, when I go to Home - DPMVault - Backup Infrastructure - Backup Management Servers - ServerName01, I have 3 backup items. When I click on the items, it shows "No DPM backup items" and 0 Disk Utilization.

I am demoing Azure for cloud backup for disaster recovery scenarios so this isn't production stopping just curious if I missed a step.

Thank you,

Microsoft Azure Site Recovery Registration Wizard and Command Line

Hi,

I'm having trouble registering the Windows Server Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host server on the Azure Recovery Site.

After successful installation of Azure Site Recovery Provider, when I tried to select the key, the application throws me an error:
"Creating an instance of the COM component with CLSID {DC1C5A9C-E88A-4DDE-A5A1-60F82A20AEF7} from IClassFactory failed due to the following error: 80040111 ClassFactory cannot supply requested class (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040111 (CLASS_E_CLASSNOTAVAILABLE))."

Also, tried with command line using drconfigurator tool, again throw me an error "This app can't run on your PC"!

Any advise?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
Aleksandar

Changing Backup Infrastructure

$

We just recently setup a Recovery Services Vault in Azure. In our vault I am trying to change the "Backup Infrastructure" settings.

I am trying to select the correct Storage replication type but both "Locally-redundant & Geo-redundant" options are grayed out.

I have an on premise MABS server installed and registered. Is there a way to make this so that it is only Locally-redundant?

Thanks - Robert
