Os Disk backup in Azure - powershell or recovery services?

$

0

Hi  All,

I need to be able to automate a backup  of a windows 2008 R2 Sp1 hosted  in Azure (retention < 2-3 days. My constraint is time to recovery which must be the fastest possible. I thought that taking a snapshot of the vhd blob could be the best solution but I am not familiar with powershell.

Azure Recovery Services seem to work only with Windows 2012 (please confirm this as my experience suggests it does not work but available documentation is rather confusing).

What could be the best solution to carry out my backup task?

Thanks in advance.

K.

SCDPM Azure Recovery Services

After configuring a self-signed certificate and uploading it to the Azure Recovery Service, whenever we try to Register the Server Azure returns that the Certificate is not associated with any backup vaults.  When we check in the Azure console the thumbprint is correct but it cannot progress beyond this step.  Any ideas?

Is it possible to backup the System State using Azure Recovery Services (I really just need to backup Active Directory and associated objects) on Server 2012?

Azure Backup queries

Current Environment:

Each file server is of 10TB size of single volume. We take one FULL backup to tape which is Monthly Full and retain for 7Yrs or more.

We have atleast 12 servers of this kind in US, EMEA and ASIA. Full backups runs over a week.

Kindly help with the following Questions:

  1.       I read that Azure Backup has a limit of 850GB per volume in One Backup Operation. Is there a way to overcome that; else Azure backup will be of no use to me?
  2.       Current retention range I could see is 7/15/30days; but I need to retain it for 7Yrs. Is that possible; how?
  3.       Do I need to pay to register a server? Asking because I may have to register a new server to do recovery to alternate server.
  4.       Is there dedupe done the backed-up data? I guess not because the data is already encrypted; please confirm.
  5.       Can we attempt to do a repair right after the verification that happens after a backup? As documented backup that needs to be repaired only attempted during next backup.
  6.       Is it possible to take a FULL backup if required? Asking because as I have understood it is only incremental.
  7.       How many copies of a backup is being stored and where are they (geographically)?
  8.       What information is gathered as part of Telemetry Reporting Services? Can I see what data this process have been connected before sending? Can we turn this off? When is this data collected and by which process?
  9.       Is it advisable to change passphrase frequenty to secure data? If not why?
  10.   Can we have more logging enabled at Azure to track who attempted backup/recovery?
  11.   Where are the physical data centers for Azure where Azure Backup Services stores data? This will be helpful for me to calculate backup/recovery time.
  12.   What is the actual size of data stored in Azure for First 1GB and subsequent backups(example 1MB)?
  13.   How long will it take to backup 1TB data (approx considering we could leverage full b/w)?
  14.   Can we have more than 3 schedules of backup of different data from the same server? I read from notes that the max possible is 3.
  15.   Other than first Full and remaining incremental; what are the other types of backups supported (example FULL anytime, Differential)? This will help me to consider for other backup use-cases.
  16.   How to calculate compression ratio before and after backing-up?
  17.   Can you elaborate of what is meant by 'number of backups retained'? Backups from one server is considered as 1 backup? Or one backup job(Full/Incremental) is considered as 1 backup? Asking because pricing is based on avg data usage per month and number of backups as I read.
  18.   What are the possible SLA's that Azure Backup Service team is planning to provide to customers?

Queries on Privacy Information for Windows Azure Backup

Reference: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn195884.aspx

  1.   Under Backup->Information Collected, Processed, or Transmitted:

Customer Data and file content is encrypted with an auto-generated key created by your Windows Server software.

What does this mean? Can we get more information on the auto-generated key and encryption process.

  1.   Under Backup-> Use of information -> Point number 2.

A token signed with the certificate that was generated during the server registration step. This allows the Service to authenticate your server uniquely

What token it is referring to?

2.  Under Backup-> Use of information -> Point number 3.

The encrypted form of the auto-generated encryption key is transferred and stored along with your backed-up Data. When you restore your Data, this encrypted key is restored first and unencrypted on your registered server.

Is it stored in a different file or what is the format? How is this key gets unencrypted during restore; what algorithm it uses?

3.    Under Backup-> Use of information -> Point number 3.

Then, the encrypted data is downloaded as a part of the restore feature, and unencrypted locally before restoring your Data to the registered server.

What key will it use to unencrypt (decrypt)? Is it the passphrase?

Unable to execute the embedded application when installing the Azure backup vault server agent

I am trying out Azure backup vault: I have downloaded the Windows server component - WABinstaller.exe - and am running it as administrator on a Windows 2008 Server system.

I keep getting "Unable to execute the embedded application to complete the installation"

Looking around there seemed to be some suggestions that reinstalling .net 4.0 might help - I did this and no change.

Any suggestions welcome please.

No backup associated with certificate?

Hi - I'm getting an error message when trying to register a Windows 2012 Essentials server:

“The certificate specified is not associated with any backup vaults. ID 34508”

I've followed other instructions and created a self-signed certificate, imported this (with private key marked exportable) to the Personal store on the LocalMachine and then exported as .cer.

It's uploaded to the Recovery Services console okay and the thumbprint online matches what's in my certificate store. I've recreated and renamed the certificates...still no success.

The log files show the Register Server process is finding the local certificates, but there's no indication of the online certificate being found or not being found.

The Windows 2012 is pretty much out of the box with just a few standard apps installed (eg NotePad++, LogMeIn etc) so I don't think it's the server config?

What else can I check?

Thanks, Nick

Hi All,

I have registered for a trial subscription for Azure Online Backup. I have added it to my already available O365 subscription. When I login to the portal I can see that the subscription is added to my account.

When I click Manage I receive the following error:

The subscription for online backup was added 3 days ago. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Thanks!

SCDPM 2012 SP1 - How to Get Windows Azure Online Backup for DPM

$

Hello!

Would you be so kind to advise how to get the Windows Azure Online Backup for DPM which is referenced in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj728752.aspx. I am getting the error 404 when I go to http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/home/features/online-backup/ from Geteasy cloud backup option with System Center 2012 SP1 orWindows Azure Online Backupwhere it tells about a "simple two-step process":

Getting started
Getting started with Windows Azure Online Backup is a simple two-step process:

  1. Get a free preview Windows Azure Online Backup account (with 300 GB of cloud storage) here.
  2. Login to the Windows Azure Online Backup portal and download and install the Windows Azure Online Backup agent for Windows Server 2012 or System Center 2012 SP1 Data Protection Manager. For Windows Server 2012 Essentials, download and install the Windows Azure Online Backup integration module.

Many thanks in advance!

Backup Failure (0x186E3)

Hello

I am encountering failures during the backup initialization phase running on a clean Windows Server 2012 standard install using the Azure backup console. The error I'm getting reads as follows:

The operation failed because Windows Azure Backup Agent was unable to contact the Windows Azure Backup. Verify that you are connected to the internet and that proxy server settings are configured correctly and then try again. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support. (0x186E3)

I'm backing up about 80GB of data over a 1Mbit connection. It seems to get a few GB in (6-9GB over roughly 24 hours) at which point it fails. I'm positive that there is no connectivity issues as the same problem is occurring across 3 completely separate servers on separate internet connections. I suppose this isn't such a big deal if the backup process is able to resume where it was interupted however I don't believe this to be the case. Can anyone verify this or offer some suggestions? Cheers

Trying to install the agent "Agent for Windows Server and System Center – Data Protection Manager" WABInstaller.exe from the backup vault page http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=288905 on an Azure-deployed 2008r2 image.  I receive the error titled "Windows Azure Backup Agent Setup" with the message "Could not load the setup launch Screen. Please contact Microsoft product support."

An sxs error is generated:  "Activation context generation failed for "D:\f950100f228943d37e59\1033\CBPSetupLaunchProcess.DLL". Is this an issue of this agent on 2008 with AMD?  Relevant sxstrace:

Azure Backup Job Never Completes

I have set up an Azure Backup job for (whilst testing) around 100MB of data but the job never finishes.  It seems to hang after the "Data transfer completed" step and remains there indefinitely.

How can I go about debugging this problem?  There are no records in the event logs and the logs for cbengine don't list any obvious errors (though they do have many warnings).

DPM2012 - Can't Disable online protection to Azure

I have a protection group that I enabled online protection to Windows Azure.  My trial has ended and I now want to disable online protection as it is failing every backup.  DPM doesn't let me do this.  It won't even let me make any changes to the protection group before I sort out my registration status with windows azure.  I then attempt to unregister my Azure subscription and it says to first remove online protection from the protection group.  Talk about a catch 22.  What should I do?

Unable to install Essentials Add-in

I attempted to download and install the add-in: OnlineBackupAddin.wssx and when I go to install it, it asks for username/password and then I get to the final install page and it just says: The add-in cannot be installed on the server.

Any ideas?

Considerations for using same Azure Backup Vault from multiple servers

Hi all

Prologue: I ended up posting to the "Managing Services on Windows Azure" forum. I was actually looking for theAzure Backupforum (was part of Windows Azure – CTPs, Betas & Labs Forums), but I cannot see those anymore after the TechNet forum change.

I have created my first backup vault in Windows Azure. On the first server where I wanted to set up online backup, I exported the public part of the computer certificate that the computer automatically gets via auto-enrollmentand uploaded the public part of the certificate to Azure Backup. After installing the agent on this server, I selected the correctcert and was able to register the server, set up up a backup plan etc.

Then I discovered two issues:

  1. Every server can currently only have ONE backup plan (found this finally confirmed on TechNet, but don't have the Source URL right now)
  2. The SAME certificate must be present in the local computer store of ALL servers that are supposed to use the same backup vault

This has the following ramifications:

  1. More overhead for setting up backups since the Azure backup agent needs to be installed/registered on many servers
  2. Instead of using a computer certificate, it might be better to create a New certificate template With EKU "Client Authentication" and "Allow private key to be exported", then enroll on the first server and copy the certificate to the other servers. This "certificate distribution" creates also overhead.

What are Your experiences so far?

/Maurice

Catalog Failure 0x80131500

I am running Azure Backup Vault on Server 2012 and everything was running fine but the last couple of weeks every backup end s with the message "Job completed with warnings:, and the details of the warning show "CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500" for certain files.  These files never had a problem before and I don't know of anything to try.  Most of these files are just simple office files and aren't anything special.  Any ideas?

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - CATALOG FAILURE__0x80131500

I'm trying to test this Azure Backup with Windows Server 2012 Essentials and keep getting this error.

CATALOG FAILURE0x80131500 for about 600 files.  It backed up 78GB, but fails on these.  Not sure why.  I can open them just fine on the server itself.

Here's a full error of one:

CATALOG FAILURE0x80131500 D:\ServerFolders\Distribution\MXMAR-PCL6-0902A-XPVISTAX64-WHQL_T1\MXMAR-PCL6-0902a-XPVistax64-whql_T1\SCPRINT

Any ideas how to fix it?  It's just annoying because I get email alerts from it daily telling me the online backup failed.

I'm using Version 1.0.8188.0 of the Windows Azure Backup Agent.

Azure Online Backup - Error CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500

Hello All,

I´m starting with Azure Online Backup. It´s a great tool !

But, on my first large backup, about 850 files were not backuped to Azure, generating warnings.
Error log for every file is:
CATALOG FAILURE  0x80131500  C:\DADOS\A7\A786\caspol.txt

I can view the content of this file accessing by Windows Explorer, so i think its not permission.
Most of the files were copied, only 850 files with this warning.

Interesting: I have Windows Server Backup running the same Schedule Backup as Azure. In Windows Server Backup everything is copied to a dedicated backup hard disk!

Anyone has an idea why this happening ?

Thanks.

Patrick
