I chose Western Europe for my location when configuring the original vault. Can I change it to North America? I want to create a site recovery plan, but I don't want to use Western Europe.

Hello team,

We have a group off VMs that only owrk for 12 hours (7am to 7PM), then are offline (dealocated). If i enable the Backup option form Azure, it will still backp the entire VM, including VHDs, NIC settings, etc? The Backup that we want to configure will be a Daily one with 7 day retention starting at 1am.

Greater flexibility in the management of recovery points

The best thing should be moving restore point from one Vault to another. Also I would appreciate the possibility to delete a restore point from power shell, that is impossible. Greater flexibility in the management of recovery points would be desirable.

A Fatal Error Occurred During Snapin Operation

I use Azure Backup to back up my wife's Windows 10 laptop to a recovery services vault in Azure (classic, because ARM wasn't available when this was set up). If I look in Azure, I can see the protected instance but if I fire up Microsoft Azure Backup on the PC, it fails to load and the error message says:

A fatal error occurred during Microsoft Azure Backup Snapin operation.
Error details: System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Timeout has expired and the operation has not been completed

[...]

Please close the Microsoft Azure Backup Snapin and restart it.

I've restarted the machine but the same error occurs?

This was working last time I checked but the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\Temp folder has a load of .crash files...

Please can someone help? Thanks, Mark

Azure backup is no longer able to launch on my SurfaceBook. I have removed the application, rebooted and reinstalled it. I have enabled re-registration in Azure. However, the application errors out before I'm able to register. This once worked but since mid-January has stopped. I'd like to get it going again. I've attached a screenshot of the error. Please let me know what to try next.

thanks, Amy

Restore duration and speed

Hi all,

How can we estimate the restore duration to Azure storage? and what are the parameters that we have to take into account?

- Data amount

- Storage account throuput

-  .....

Can we optimise by using multiple storage accounts for the client VMs? what about managed disks where we don't manage the storage accounts behind?...

Thanks a lot,

Nadeen

Missing Files and Folders

I have an Azure Backup running on Windows Server Essentials 2012 (I can't see how to determine the version of the backup agent). The service has been taking backups since 2017.

Attempting to restore files and folders from the backup, there are backups every day for the past month as expected. However selecting the backup from yesterday, does not show any files or folders added since 4th September 2017, and no modification dates are newer than this date.

Checking the azure logs, every day there is a note that 1 backup (for C:\ and E:\), C:\ Is Successful but E:\ is Unsuccessful. Then later there is another backup for E:\ only that is successful (and transfers say ~400MB of data).

In event viewer there is only a warning "The backup operation has completed with warnings." message, with no more detail. In CBEngineCurr.log the main repeated:

WARNINGCKeyManager::IsKeyExpired::Key is expired according to expiry days [180]

Is there a way to find out what is transferred in a backup job? Or why I cannot see files or folders created in the past year?

The storage type is not supported by Azure backup

Standard D1v2 VM with one OS disk and one Data disk.  Both disks are Standard SSD.  Backup was configured in the portal during creation of the VM.  Searching on the specific error code turned up no results.  Didn't do anything weird on this - just created a new subscription, created a resource group, and created a VM with backup enabled.

Anybody know what could be wrong?

Error Code: UserErrorUnsupportedStorageType
Error Message: The storage type is not supported by Azure backup.
Recommended Action: Please contact Microsoft support for assistance.

Backup fails after removal of volume - cannot rerun schedule

Hi. I removed a volume, and now the backup fails with error:

one or more volumes with files does not exist 0x186C7

So, when I try to rerun the schedule backup to remove the volume, the wizard fails with "volume doesn't exist ...blah blah"

Seems like it's a bit of a catch 22!! How can I get the backup to work, without being able to remove the old volume!!??

I don't want to delete the existing schedule.

Many thanks, Doug.

Azure Recovery vault access to other developers

Hello,

I've configured Recovery Service Vault as per below link,

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/alerting-and-monitoring-for-azure-backup/

but I want other developers to see this from their azure web portal and have them configure alerts and play around while we do testing. What details\access rights I need to provide them so that they can see the Recovery Service Vault that I created and play around. Thanks.

Azure Backup - KB3119587 - New Offline Policy

$

I’m new to Azure and hoping that someone can provide some clarity to the offline seeding job being stuck at waiting for job to complete.

I followed the documentation contained in the offline-backup workflow in Azure backup. The initial staging location was an external drive connected to VM. Once completed, the external drive was taken to a different physical server where the shipping drive was prepared without issue. The drive was sent to Azure, imported and looked like all was good except for the job being stuck.

Looking further (KB3119587) the original name doesn’t match the import job name. I deleted the first offline backup policy and I’m attempting to setup a new offline backup policy as suggested in the KB article, and Azure informed me the backup had been deleted. In setting up the new policy it’s asking for the staging location which was the external drive to begin with. This is where it becomes unclear to me. Am I going to have re-run the process again to correct this? And if so, delete the Azure storage blob and start completely over? Completely unclear…..

I’d be greatly appreciative if someone could please provide some guidance with this issue!!

MABS and .vmdk restore

$

Hello all,

I have a simple question...we are using MABS with the latest update and our hypervisor is VMware.

So we create Protection group by adding server into them...

My question is with MABS : When we want to restore a specific server is it possible to only restore specific file/folder within that .vmdk without restoring the entire .vmdk file.

Server added in the protection group are agentless...no Microsoft Azure Backup DPM Protection Agent installed on them.

Regards,

Stephane

Microsoft.Compute/restorePointCollections is creating a resource group.

I set a backup for a VM and for some reason Microsoft.Compute/restorePointCollections has a hidden resource and creates it's own resource group.

Anyone know of a way to change it's resource group?

MABS server on Azure replicating to another region recovery services vault - Pricing

Team,

Thanks in advance, I've one of our customer who is currently hosted in West India Region.

As backup feature is not available in this region we wanted to find alternative for this, Currently if we implemet Azure Backup server (MABS) in West India and take the backup fo VMs hosted in west India which replicates to a recovery services vault which is created in central India. How charges would occur?

As outboud data charges are chargeable between azure region, MABS server replicate to Central India recovery services vault will i be paying for the outbound data charges for all the VM which i protect?

Question 2 : If i install MARS agent and use the above scenario, i will be charges for outbound data transfer?

If both are chargeable basis, what is the Azure Backup team suggestion in this scenario what i can use for backup of Azure VM? West India region is launched since long and we don't have backup feature in this region.

Backup SQL database running on Azure VM (SQL installed) to Windows Azure Blob Service

Hello Team,

We are running Windows Azure VM with SQL server 2012 SP1 with CU 2 on it. Currently we are backing up our SQL databases to local data disk. We are planning to use Windows Azure Blob Service for our SQL databases backup. We have gone through the documentation to use backup to URL method to take your database backup to Windows Azure Blob service. We were referring to the blow OLD documentation.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/sql/sql-server-2012/jj919148(v=sql.110)

Here, it is mentioned that the maximum size of database backup is 1 TB. Could you please help me to understand if this size limit is per database backup or it is for the maximum size of data I can backup to Windows Azure blob Service.

Also, using this backup to URL method how Can i specify multiple databases to be backup.

MABs console crash

Installed the latest version of MABs onto Server 2016, when trying to add the MSDPM DB to a protection group the MMC crashes. The event below is logged in the application log. I've seen the console crashing with several new installation on different servers for a couple of months now, seems to be a bug that hasn't been fixed yet?? Found another article mentioning a dll file that needs to be replaced?: https://stackingitblog.com/2017/05/09/dpm-2016-ur2-mmc-console-crashes-event-id-999/

The description for Event ID 999 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

An unexpected error caused a failure for process 'mmc'.  Restart the DPM process 'mmc'.

Azure Recovery Services Agent - Setup Wizard - you are not connected to the internet

Installing Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent on work laptops for use with Azure online backup.

Receiving "you are not connected to the internet" message.

MARSAgentInstaller.exe is brand new download, and worked yesterday on another laptop in the office seamlessly.

Two laptops today keep giving the "you are not connected to the internet" message on the 2nd screen of the installation process.  First screen id's the Installation Folder location and Cache Location (did not change, used default locations.)

Next screen is Proxy Configuration screen.  We do not use a proxy server, so on first laptop simply clicked the Next button and install was flawless.  On the two laptops today:

"Specify how you want to connect to the internet whenever the provider connects...." and under that, with a yellow triangle exclamation icon:  "You are not connected to the internet."

-all computers are up to date with windows updates

-tried over wifi and ethernet - same error

-tried using tethering to mobile hotspot on cellphone (to eliminate firewall, local connection etc) - same error

-removed and reinstalled ethernet drivers - same error

and many other attempts.  Online chat with Microsoft desk resulted in request to post to this forum.

Please help!  this appears from all instructions, to be the easy part - just install the client software.

thank you!
