Download SQL Backups from Azure

I setup MS Azure Backup Service on prem and sync up to Azure and I am backing up on prem SQL servers.  Is there a way to download the .db or .bak files direct from the Azure portal, or does it have to be through a backup server?  I can see the backups in the vault, but cannot find a way to download them directly.

Cloud Backup

"Hello all, I wanted to find out what is needed to move forward with my backup using Microsoft Azure Backup Services. I've spent a few hours on this, and am stuck at a point where I have no 'Backup Configurations', but I have protected servers, and it's prompting me to set up a 'Protection Group' (DPM). Is DPM required, and can I use MABS on a free trial? Please let me know any information you have on this, as the documentation is a bit unclear and I'd like to get this up and running as soon as possible."

Azure backup strategy on windows VMs

$

We have a load of single servers at a lot (200+) different sites to backup. We tested MABS but find it too cumbersome to install and maintain in so many locations for the benefits it gives

These are Hyper V servers will 2 windows server VMs running on them. We want to backup the whole VMs.

Azure site recovery is a nice option but doesn't keep enough history to be a true backup solution as its really a DR solution with a few days history.

The solution we have been using is to simply install the MARS agent on the Hyper V host, and backup the actual vhdx files of the production VMs. Works fine so far, we have tested restores and they work fine (ie restoring the VHDX to a new VM and they boot fine). Also tried connecting to the backup sitting in Azure from on premise server and mounting the VHDX as a drive and we can restore individual files.

It seems a bit of an odd approach but gives us a nice light footprint at each site and does work.

As far as local backups we are simply running Windows backup daily to an internal drive on the local host, then the MARS azure backup runs on a different schedule. It gives us a local backup, a cloud backup of the WHOLE VM, a simple and light install

Only two downsides we have is:

1. The local windows backup only allows FULL system restores from the last actual backup which in the case of an issue happening prior to last successful backup you are in trouble

2. Restores from Azure of a whole VM take a long time. We have 500mb/500mb internet here and a 75GB file takes 8 hours (incidentally we tried restoring the same backup file sitting in Azure to an Azure VM and very similar time)

Be interested to hear comments from anyone with good knowledge of azure backups on our approach

Unable to delete resources

Hello,

I am unable to delete resources from our Azure back up section that are no longer active, and need to be removed.  I have worked with twitter Azure support, and they had set up a one time support help, but that was not working either, so they recommended I bring the issue here to get some help.

Backup agent 24h "Generating backup metadata information"

$

I found in this post a very similar description of what's happening but I'd like to point out some additional details:

- It's not first synchronization but we deleted VHD of volume E: from scratch subfolder

- In our case it's not about TBs/million of files.
This week on tuesday we compressed a lot of PDFs in E:, total affected files 35.000/50GB, total protected folders in E: about 100/150GB

- Logs about creating differencing VHD looking fine, new VHD always at same size/last modified date, since yesterday morning.
C: volume completed after a few minutes.

For 24 hours now backup process is always "generating backup metadata".
In CBEngineCurr.errlog I can't find anything relevant to me, it's always reporting repeatedly:

dscontext.cpp(184) [000000001C1358E0] 89FB7410-52F2-4CF6-A471-17BCB23A2C94 ACTIVITY Last completed state for Ds Id (17592432785324) is 6
dscontext.cpp(184) [000000001C1365E0] 89FB7410-52F2-4CF6-A471-17BCB23A2C94 ACTIVITY Last completed state for Ds Id (17593667081818) is 18

...and sometimes this about a key, which I can't fully understand:

keymanager.cpp(98) NORMAL CKeyManager::InitializeCurrentKey: Current key is already initialized for local machine
keymanager.cpp(140) NORMAL CKeyManager::InitializeCurrentKey: Initialization of current key is completed successfully
keymanager.cpp(44)    NORMAL    <--CKeyManager::InitializeCurrentKey2
keymanager.cpp(665) WARNING CKeyManager::IsKeyExpired::Key is expired according to expiry days [180]

...and this:

cloudbackupproviderimpl.cpp(1080)    NORMAL    <--CCloudBackupProviderImpl::GetEncryptionKeyStatus
engine.cpp(114) NORMAL New engine wrapper registered. Current engine wrappers count - 1594
cloudbackupproviderimpl.cpp(135) NORMAL New CBP wrapper registered. Current CBP wrappers count - 1594

We have no throttling limit on a 20MB upload band.
That "CBP wrappers" count is always increasing and cbengine process is constantly using 25% of CPU, wtih no disk access and no significant TCP traffic.

What it's doing?! Is it worth waiting?

Unfortunately we don't have a support program, it's very expensive for a single small server backed up, therefore any advice will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Marco

Unmanaged VM uses VMSnapshot extension while taking backup and No snapshot extension when my VM is Managed Disk

Team,

I was surprised to see there was no snapshot extension installed on my Azure VM when i enable Azure Backup on Managed Disk VM

I then created a Unamanaged Disk VM and saw that VM Snapshot Extension gets installed in the below folder

C:\Packages\Plugins\Microsoft.Azure.RecoveryServices.VMSnapshot\1.0.49.0

How does the backup works when i have Managed disk VM?

As per my undertsanding, VM Snapshot extension is installed so that we can get app consistent snapshot. But isn't that required when i have managed Disk VM?

Azure backup is no longer able to launch on my SurfaceBook. I have removed the application, rebooted and reinstalled it. I have enabled re-registration in Azure. However, the application errors out before I'm able to register. This once worked but since mid-January has stopped. I'd like to get it going again. I've attached a screenshot of the error. Please let me know what to try next.

thanks, Amy

Why do I get this Warning under Monitoring - Alerts?

I have the latest version downloaded from Azure.

Backup AD VM

Hello Team,

1. We had a vm with Windows Server 2016 and there is a feature to backup Active Directory but we have completed the lift and shift of our ON Premise VM’s to Azure. I want to know how we can proceed backing up AD configured on a VM and store the backup in Azure Backup or some other location in Azure and also have them restored as and when required.

and

2.) In this article, it mentions protection (backing up) system state on an on-premise Windows VM.

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/windows-server-system-state-backup-azure-ga/

Follow the four simple steps below to start protecting Windows Servers using Azure Backup.

  •         Create an Azure Recovery Services Vault in the Azure portal
  •         Download the latest version of the Azure Backup Agent to your on-premises Windows Servers from the Azure Portal
  •         Install and Register the Agent to your Recovery Services Vault in Azure
  •         Start protecting Windows Server System State and other Files and Folders directly to Azure!

Would the above steps apply to an IaaS VM in the cloud?  Would we follow the same process to protect the system state of our AD on our Azure VMs?

Any suggestions please.

thanks,

Bkfs.

I set a backup for a VM and for some reason Microsoft.Compute/restorePointCollections has a hidden resource and creates it's own resource group.

Anyone know of a way to change it's resource group?

Hello,

I need to set up a way to receive successful backup notifications.
however, I have tried the link below through the Activity Log, and there are no backup records.
But in the work of backups, they are present as status of successful.

Retention limitation for Azure Files Backup

$

I am currently using the Azure File Shares along with Azure File Sync services in production environment.

I have configures the Azure Backup for Azure File Share and it is working fine. Except, the current retention period you can configure in Azure Admin portal is limiting you to only 120 days retention of the daily snapshots/backups.

Has anybody been able to find a work around this?  We have a requirement to retain a monthly snapshot for several years.

I appreciate any suggestions/comments.

Thanks - Sam

Hello all, I´m getting this error when trying to register our DPM server (2012 R2 CU9). We checked everything related to network connectivity (NICs, cables, switches, routers, firewall, even different internet connections) and didn´t found any errors.

The strange thing is, the backup data is uploading OK, but for example restore information or used space is not showing in the DPM console.

In the agent log, sometimes appears this entry:

10B4 3820 04/12 17:40:06.196 20 HttpClientRequest.cs(500)  CF720E29-D206-46DB-839A-07BE3B8E7F6E WARNING WebException thrown; [System.Net.WebException: Unable to connect to the remote server ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 191.237.32.214:443

Any ideas? I´m really lost with this one.

Best regards
