Issues with Azure Backup client

$

Hi, I have a recurring issue when using Azure Backup client. I use it to backup 8 servers for a customer, file and system backup.

Almost everytime we have run windows updates on the servers (2 times a month), we get backup warnings on random servers. These warnings can last for a couple of days or weeks. The warning is usually "Data failure", and the issue is the c:\windows\winsxs folder, random areas in this folder.

I cannot really exclude the winsxs folder, since it is important if a restore is needed.

At the moment I have setup the backup notifications to be sent to my own email adress, I cannot setup the customer email adress as long as we keep getting all these random errors.

Anyone else having this issue, and maybe a solution for the issue?

Deleting unneeded restore points

I'm trying to reduce the amount of storage space used by some of our backups. As part of this, I've reduced the retention period on some from 12 months to 6. However, this has not made any difference to the total space consumed, presumably because backups already created will be retained for 12 months as previously configured.

I'd rather not delete the entire vault and start again, but that seems to be the only option available.

Is there any way of deleting restore points from retention?

Need Off-Site Storage Solution for Windows Backup

$

Hello,

I am using Veeam free edition to backup 3 physical servers (Windows Server 2019 Datacenter).  I am looking to find an off-site storage solution that I can add as a network location on my servers, so that Veeam can detect it.  If anyone could help me with this, that would be great.

Please don't suggest using Windows Backup with Azure, I did that in the past and was not a huge fan of it.

Edit: After looking a bit further and talking to Azure Support, I have decided to look into "Blob Blocks", however, I can not find where Blob Blocks is located in the Marketplace.  If anyone could point me in the direction of these blocks, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

backup fails - managed backup seems to break regular differential backups. (added log details)

Hello,

I do full backups and diff backups with Ola Hallengren solution to blob storage. I get the following error message:

Msg 3035, Sev 16, State 1, Line 1 : Cannot perform a differential backup for database "<database>", because a current database backup does not exist. Perform a full database backup by reissuing BACKUP DATABASE, omitting the WITH DIFFERENTIAL option. [SQLSTATE 42000]

The first full backup fixes the issue.
in the errorlog i see the following events:

I tried to do the following

/// managed backup master switch (on/off)
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/system-stored-procedures/managed-backup-sp-backup-master-switch-transact-sql?view=sql-server-ver15

*/

I looked into the portal to check automated backup settings:
there is starts with some graphs and used data storage, a message:
There was a problem getting the status of SQL Server on the VM. Please try again after a few minutes.
then
Automated Backup is currently disabled due to a change in backup settings via SQL Server Managed Backup. When you enable automated backup, your managed backup settings will be overridden.
which makes me wonder if the vm is missing something. (hence the getting status error)

I did not find the missing managed_backup.* procedures in the msdb.
(i can device several solutions that in the end fix my problem, but i want to understand what is gone wrong. )
any thoughts an where to start?

MABS Console listing old databases and not showing new ones on local server

I wanted to add some new databases to the list of backed up objects by our MABS instance, however I've noticed something odd.

The console would display old, no longer existing databases in the databases available for backup on our SQL server. There's a "Refresh" button that should, potentially, clear some cache... but it's grayed out.

Just for testing I attempted to back up a non-existing database... and sure enough, I got an error when calculating the required disk space.

How do I force MABS to refresh the list of databases?

Can't delete Protected Server in Recovery Service Vault

I used Azure Backup Agent (MARS) for backup on-premises Files and Folders. After testing i did „Stop a Scheduled Backup“ in the Azure Backup Agent. This was 3 weeks ago, so there are no Backup Items anymore. Now I can’t delete the Protected Server in the Recovery Service Vault! The Delete Button is greyed out. If i want to delete the Recovery Services vault there comes the error:

Vault cannot be deleted as there are existing resources within the vault. : KAMPFSTERN. Unregister all containers from the vault and then retry to delete vault.

[Announcement] Microsoft Q&A to replace MSDN community platform

$

Azure is moving from our MSDN platform to the new Microsoft Q&A platform to help users find faster answers!  Some Azure services have already been migrated, while others (including this one) will be migrated in the near future.

Can I still post here?

Yes. Migration is happening in stages so until there is an announcement, please continue to use MSDN for this service. Be aware once a service has moved, the MSDN forum is closed and you can then post on Microsoft Q&A.

What has already moved?

There will be a notification in any MSDN forum that has already moved.  Additionally, you can look at ourlist of services on Microsoft Q&A.

When will the move happen?

This service will be migrated from MSDN to Microsoft Q&A over the next couple months.  When we do move, we will make an announcement here on MSDN.  After migrating to Microsoft Q&A, readers will no longer be able to make posts for this service on MSDN (old answers will still be readable, however).

How do I use Microsoft Q&A?

Microsoft Q&A uses tags instead of forums for each service.  To help ease you through this transition, pleaseread our Microsoft Q&A getting started guide.

O356 backup to Azure question

Hello we are setting up to backup our O365 environment up to backup to our Microsoft Azure platform. We needed confirmation that when backing up O365 to Azure the data never travels over the internet, but only on microsofts backbone? Thus if we backed up locally to a device on our networker, would the data pass thru the internet?

Restoring files while using encrypted Azure VM

$

Hi,

I'm using Azure VMs backup with encrypted disks but this point Azure backup do not support file/folder restore for encypted VMs. Restoring those VMs disks and then creating VM from those disks works fine.

Are there any prefered methods to restore file/folder using Azure backup while using encrypted disks that could be implemented easily to hundreds of VMs? Only thing that I could came up with is restore the disk and attach them to vm and then move files/folder from restored disk to existing vm. But IMO that is alot of work for just few files/folder.

Any thoughts?

How to retrieve the size of the Recovery Services Backup Storage Vault in Azure Powershell?

$
0
0

I am currently working on an Azure Powershell Script that retrieves the names of the Recovery Service Vaults, the protected VMs, as well as the current size of the vault.

However, I am unable to retrieve from Powershell the current size of the vault that stores the backups, which is available on the Azure portal

Get-AzureRmRecoveryServicesBackupProperty only gives the BackupStorageRedundancy Property, but not the size. Neither the vault data (Get-AzureRmRecoveryServicesVault), the storage context (Get-AzureRmRecoveryServicesVaultContext), the backup container (Get-AzureRmRecoveryBackupContainer), nor the backup item (Get-AzureRmRecoveryBackupItem) seems to have the size property I need.

Is this option implemented in Azure Powershell yet? If yes, which cmdlet gives me access to this data? If not, when will this be implemented?

I have added exclusion rules for the MARS folders/files in Windows Defender as suggested here.

And I have manually started the script which creates the files to be backed up, and checked with ProcessExplorer that there is no process left having a lock or a handle on these files.

Also file access permissions should be no issue, as there are lots of other files in those specific subdirectories which MARS was able to backup.

Could you please help me fix this issue? Thank you.
