Azure Backup for on-premise servers

$

Hi,

I have only one Hyper-V VM on-prem that I need to make available if I lose it such as when the whole office/server goes down. I plan to use Azure Backup. I have a couple of questions:

1. Do I have to install Azure Backup Server on-prem in order to communicate with the Recovery Service Vault in Azure?

2. If my office/server goes down, can I restore the VM locally in Azure and make it available again? It seems to me even if this is doable, it will take some time to restore. This server is mostly for external communication so some DNS changes need to be made for sure.

I see Azure Backup server is free (but Recovery Service Vault is not I suppose). I am also looking into Azure Site Recovery but it looks expensive and seems to be an overkill for one on-prem VM.

Thanks,

SQL Server 2014 Managed Backup to Azure - Full database backups are not being uploaded to Azure (log backups work great)

Lately my SQL Server 2014 (in an AlwaysOn availability group with one active and one passive node) full backups have not been saving to Azure, the logs are saving great, it is just the daily fulls that don't make it. I am using the Managed Backup in SQL (smart_admin, access key, page blob location, encrypted, etc.) and not the Azure Backup SQL related stuff. They are for some reason being created in my default backup directory locally on the server but as a file name like {GUIDtypeValueHere}59 with no file extension and the file physically doesn't exist on my disk after the operation is complete. I have attempted to look at the smart_admin logs but for some reason I am unable to get anything to return from my queries. I rebooted the SQL servers and I am able to get the logs back but there is nothing from the previous days in there now. I was also able to create a one off backup via smart_admin.sp_backup_on_demand and it did create in the Azure storage location so it just seems to be the automated portion of the full backups which is not functioning for some reason. Anyone run into this before? Or know how to troubleshoot the automated process that is occurring?

SQL in Azure VM backup not available in portal

I have contributor permissions on a Recovery Services vault that contains 'SQL Server in Azure VM' items, but I cannot access them nor create new ones through the portal.

What I can see when in the Backup Items blade is the following (i cannot post images):
Azure Virtual Machine, Azure Storage (Azure Files), DPM, Azure Backup Server, Azure Backup Agent

When I try to add a new Backup Goal - the only available options are Virtual Machine and Azure FileShare.

I can list all backup items using Azure CLI though - and then access them directly in the browser using their id property.

What might be the issue here? Do i need any other permissions to be able to see SQL backup items in the portal?

Source code saving

Hi,

My sources are hosted in the ALM Azure DevOps with the repository Github. I would like to know if there is a backup process mentioned in the basic contract with Microsoft ? Clearly: are there any backups planned in the cloud for the source code in the event of a crash ?

Thanks by advance.

Olivier.

When using Azure Backup for SQL Server (with RSV)

Have an issue where we have noticed that all SQL Server databases in an Azure Backup policy run concurrently and not consecutively as would happen when using SQL Server agent jobs or Ola Hallengren Maintenance Solution.

This is causing issues as we have a number of policies each containing numerous large databases.  We find they don't backup FULL in a timely manner over a weekend.

Is there any way of making the policies backup consecutively?

How to restore all available logs

When I restore an SQL Server in VM backup with logs, I have to select a specific point in time. How can I simply restore all available log backups?

The time picker tool has its granularity and does not allow selecting the maximum time. I noticed that I can enter an invalid date, note the maximum possible value in the validation error and enter it as the recovery point in time. Still, this does not feel like the right way.

Azure Backup/Recovery: On premises to the cloud with changes

Hi,

I have few questions regarding what to do when you have to make changes and you already have registered your vault, uploaded certs etc. I understand the process: You register, create vault, upload a cert, download a backup agent and then run it on your server, and then do a backup to cloud. What If after all those is said and done now I need to do some changes?

1) What if server crashes and I need to recover stuff onto another one? Do I need another cert uploaded and new server added to vault or create new vault with new server? Please explain why?

2) What if server name is changed? Where do I update it? Do I need to delete something, then re-register back again from scratch? Please explain and why?

3) Do I need to change any settings in "Microsoft Azure Backup Properties"?

4) What other changes are common?

Can somebody present me from a-z steps for each? What do I do in Azure, what do I do on premises? Do I have to re-install agent?

Any help much appreciated. God bless.

Azure Backup - Segregated backups

Hi,

We have a customer who is wishing to be able to have 'Off Site/Offline' backups in Azure for their Azure services, but are wanting to ensure that these are protected from a virus or similar making the backups useless.

They are wanting to ensure that a break out of a virus on their network would not effect the backups that stored in Azure. So before going to the customer, I wish to understand more of this as there is a small amount of information but can not find much more.

Would the inbuilt features in Azure, RBAC, Security Center, Secured Storage Accounts, Storage Firewalls and VNETS be enough to stop a virus or malware that would lock out users from the files/backups?

Many thanks

Tom

Full Backup Retention

Hello everyone, everything good?

I have a question about backing up data and vms to azure using agent mars azure.

Scenario :

Retention 30 days.

Backup FULL on the first day and the rest incremental, so far ok.

What will happen on the 31st day of the backup, will it delete the full backup?

I've searched everywhere and I can't find anything about it.

I use Veeam Backup and replication and it keeps the incremental backup forever, always keeping a full copy, does it work like that with Azure?

Azure File Share Backup - Premium Storage

Is there a MS supported solution for backing up Azure files that are using premium storage?  I know i cant be the first person looking for tihs.  I need the speed of premium storag and my preference is not to create a vm to act as a fileshare that has Premium storage.  i want to use the fileshare service for this, but not having a good backup solution is not an option.

I have considered that i could build a VM, add approprate storage (standard or premium since you back backup vms with premium, then sync the files over, but that is a work around.

Unable to delete Vault // not able to unregister containers from the vault

I'm trying to delete a Resource group but no luck ...

Delete resource group WACResourceGroup failed
Failed to delete resource group WACResourceGroup: Deletion of resource group 'WACResourceGroup' failed as resources with identifiers 'Microsoft.RecoveryServices/vaults/WACvault1' could not be deleted. (Code: ResourceGroupDeletionBlocked) Vault cannot be deleted as there are existing resources within the vault. : D-S78547.
Unregister all containers from the vault and then retry to delete vault. For instructions, see https://aka.ms/AB-AA4ecq5 (Code: ServiceResourceNotEmptyWithContainerDetails, Target: /subscriptions/xxxxxxxx/resourceGroups/WACResourceGroup/providers/Microsoft.Recovery

Ok I need to unregister all containers from the vault

So here we go ..

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/az.recoveryservices/unregister-azrecoveryservicesbackupcontainer?view=azps-3.5.0

to start if I add theName parameter I get

Get-AzRecoveryServicesBackupContainer : A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name 'Name'.

So here we go without -Name and I get a somewhat logical response.

Get-AzRecoveryServicesBackupContainer -ContainerType "Windows" -BackupManagementType MARS

FriendlyName ContainerType BackupManagementType
------------ ------------- --------------------
d-s78547. Windows MARS
Lets load a var and see what happens ...

PS C:\Windows\system32> $Cont = Get-AzRecoveryServicesBackupContainer -ContainerType "Windows" -BackupManagementType MARS
PS C:\Windows\system32> Unregister-AzRecoveryServicesBackupContainer -Container $Cont
Unregister-AzRecoveryServicesBackupContainer : The specified resource does not exist
At line:1 char:1+ Unregister-AzRecoveryServicesBackupContainer -Container $Cont+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : InvalidArgument: (:) [Unregister-AzRe...BackupContainer], Exception+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Azure.Commands.RecoveryServices.Backup.Cmdlets.UnregisterAzureRmRecoveryServicesBackupContainer

At this point I have no further ideas... Anybody with some nugget where to look or even a solution?

Hi, Can anyone suggest me how to get 'Windows Azure Service Management for Extensions' certificate.

It seems that server is missing the updated certificate (but showing in portal cloud service classic as created) which is causing VMSnapshot extension error.

Thanks in advance
