DPM 2012 R2, Azure and Incremental Backup

$

Good day to all.

Couple of months ago we set up monthly backup of some folders from file server (physical server, OS Windows 2012 Standard) through System Center DPM 2012 R2 (physical server, OS Windows 2012 Standard) to Azure Cloud Backup. Size of protected data: approx 2 Tb.

Protection group was configured to store 62 days of everyday local recovery points, 60 months of every month online recovery points, and 10 years of every year recovery points (yeah, much time).

Protection group settings:
Short-term retention range: 62 days
Recovery points (files): 21:00 Everyday
Online backup members: 1 of 1
Online backup frequency: Monthly
Online backup schedule: 1 Everymonth, 0:30
Online retention range: 60 months (1 everymonth, 0:30); 10 years (1 of march, 0:30)

Short-term backup works just fine: one full backup one time, and just synchronising and making incremental backups, so 62 recovery points of ~2Tb files and folder takes ~2,2Tb of backup storage; and every backup job finishes in 10-15 minutes. This is great.

Online backup works not so fine: every first date of month making full backup; so - 4 recovery points takes ~8Tb of Azure Vault. Backup job takes days (!) to upload so much data.

Question: is DPM / Azure online backup supports incremental backups? And how to configure Protection Group, to use incremental online backups?

Azure Backup Failed - An Unexpected Error 0x07EF9

We configured an Azure Backup for our Windows Server 2012 R2, but every time it tries to run the actual backup we received this error:

An unexpected error occurred during the operation.  Retry the operation (0x07EF9).

We looked at the log files and pinpointed this line where is has the same error code:

[0x80070020] Setting error on File provider 000000001ABB1090. DlsErrorCode = 0x7ef9

Can someone shed a bit of light at the possible cause of this issue? So far I cannot find any information where to even start.

Much thanks in advance.

Incorrect Dates in Recover Data Wizard

When I recover data on my Azure Windows Server, it shows the incorrect file dates and sizes in the wizard (an older version than expected). This is happening for many dates and files I've tried in the restore.

The files appear to be being backed up fine and the resulting restored file shows the expected file date and size. I've updated to the latest version of the Azure Backup tool as of last night. The backups all show successful with data being backed up. There are no errors in the Event Viewer CloudBackup category.

Has anyone experienced the same issue?

Hello! Twitter customer @shamonbent1 is experiencing the following problem with Azure Backup; "We are experiencing issues with Azure Backup recovery. Backups complete, but file dates are old when we attempt to recover."

We would appreciate your assistance on this matter. Thanks!

Creating a separate Server from Backup Vault rather than Image

With Azure creating and image of a server deletes the original server (by Design) so to try to get around this I created aseparate VM from a backup

It allows you do this but I wondering does it cause any issues with conflicts, etc.?

"Selected items list for Backup is large or selected items have long path names." ?!?

"Unable to save backup policy. Selected items list for Backup is large or selected items have long path names. Please retry operation again after reducing individual items or selecting complete folders."

This is in  response to trying to save a policy with a long list of exclusions. Does anyone know what the limits are i.e. what is the maximum number of"individual items" and/or the maximum path name lengths? I suspect it is the number of"individual items"that has caused the error.

Hello,

How can I set retention policy of my folder backup to always keep ONLY last backup, I do not need any previous backups to be kept. I want to retain only the last backup I made regardless the time of backup, even if next backup is months later.

Can someone help with setting retention policy of Azure Backup Agent ?

Thanks

From Eoin Ryan ‏@edanto via Twitter:

What version of DPM 2012 SP1 (not R2) is req'd for the latest version of the DPM Azure Backup agent? Does 4.1.3465 need patch? More specifically, will a DPM 4.1.3465 server with v2.0.8715.0 of Azure agent stop backing up after this Wed? Patches needed?

Mandatory Update for Azure Backup Agent

Hello,

It was announced in this blog Mandatory Update for Azure Backup Agent back in August 2015 that you needed to update the Azure backup Agent to avoid backup failures.   As it turned out, the Azure Storage Service removal was postponed for a year to give customers more time to upgrade effected applications.  The new timeline is announced here

We are recommending that you upgrade the Azure backup Agent to the latest foundhere

For DPM 2012 Sp1 - we recommend being on DPM Update Rollup 8 (UR8) Version 4.1.3465 - KB 2991995
For DPM 2012 R2   - we recommend being on DPM update Rollup 8 (UR8) Version 4.2.1373.0 -  KB3086084

DPM Agent and Azure Agent on The Same Primary DPM Server

Hi,

We have a primary DPM server with a secondary configured off site, we would like to transition to using Azure as the secondary site and removing the secondary site.  To make this transition can we use the DPM secondary and Azure at the same time to make the transition.

If not any suggestions as to how to transition to Azure whilst maintaining the secondary site with out having to build another DPM primary and transitioning that way.

Cheers

Backing up Azure VMs to on premise backup server

$

Hi,

I have googled this a lot but cannot find a simple answer on how I should proceed to be able to back up my Azure VMs to an on premise backup server. The reason why we need to do that is because it is demanded by our government that the some data due to it's type must be available within the nations borders.

Does anyone know a straightforward way to perform Azure to on premise backups of complete VMs?

I know there's a thousand ways to do it the opposite way but that's not what I'm interested in.

Thank you

/Cris

Slow Azure Backup

Hello

I'm using MS Azure Backup to cloud on a Windows Server Standard 2012 R2 (azure server).

I installed the backup agent and I`am using the Microsoft Management Console 3.0. Backup is every night at 8 PM.

The backup size is about 50 GB...data transfered is about 810 MB this takes about 48 hours to backup. Just for estimating the size of the backup it takes 12 hours or more.

When the job takes so long, the next schedule job fails and backup are made every  two days.

What can I do  improve the backup performance?

Thank You

Azure Backup is not backing up changed files

$

I have Microsoft Azure Backup running on Windows 10.  I am backing up a single folder (for testing) and all new files in the folder are backed up correctly.  However,  any changed files are not being backed up.  For example,  I created a document on Tuesday which is backed up to Azure on Tuesday afternoon's backup.  I changed the document on Wednesday morning but the new document was not backed up on Wednesday afternoon's backup.   To verify it was still backing something up I create a new document on Thursday morning and the new document was backed up Thursday but my changed document still was not backed up.

To verify it was not backed up I restored the document from the newest available backup and the file size, date modified, and content were all from the original document.

Does Azure Backup only backup new files, is this a setting, or is something wrong?  Thank you for any help you can provide.

Backup Azure VM

What's the best way to backup an Azure VM in the cloud?

I've tried a number of methods and run into issues with all of them, including:

1. Attempting to use the Backup Vault. Problem is there are no vaults created and no way it seems to create one (no create button anywhere!)

2. Using PowerShell scripts. At one point I need to install a certificate. In this, the final step is

Publish-AzureServiceProject -ServiceName

Run I run this safely against an existing VM?

3. The PowerShell command that requires a certificate is:

Get-AzureSubscription $subscription | Set-AzureSubscription -CurrentStorageAccountName $storageAccountName

4. An alternative way to specify this from what I've seen is:

Set-AzureSubscription -CurrentStorageAccountName $storageAccountName -SubscriptionName $subscription

However, this does nothing (ie. running Get-AzureSubscription still shows a blank CurrentStorageAccountName)

Does the above command require the VM to be stopped to work?

Apologies for all the questions, I would've assumed backing up a VM would've been straight forward!
