Azure Recovery Service- Backups failing

$

Hi,

I am testing the Azure Recovery Service and keep coming up with the same error:

Command execution failed

Please retry the operation

I have created a new vault, discovered, registered and protected the VM, then started a manual backup. This backup fails every time after 48-50 minutes. I have tested different VMs with the same result.

I have searched for this error but am not getting anywhere, any help appreciated.

Backup failures - Azure VM Agent Proxy issue?

$

Hi,

We are seeing lots of failed backups (with Azure IaaS VMs) for the reason "Could not communicate with the VM agent for snapshot status. Snapshot VM sub task timed out.". I see in the MicrosftAzure\Diagnostics\GuestAgent event log there are lots of errors for failing to communicate to Azure services.

I've been through the troubleshooting at https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/backup-azure-vms-prepare/#2-network-connectivity , however, setting the proxy doesn't appear to make any difference. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling agent with the proxy set to no avail. We are also using the latest version of the agent (2.7.1198.735).

Can anyone offer any advice on setting up the agent via a proxy, or any other suggestions for more reliable backups?

Many thanks!

Setup / Configuration query - ASR VMWare to Azure

We've been trying to follow the steps in this article:

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/site-recovery-vmware-to-azure-classic/#step-5-install-the-management-server

We have progressed as far as the end of Step 5, but seem to be unable to complete this section:

WARNING:

Microsoft Azure Recovery Service Agent's proxy needs to be setup. Once the installation is complete launch an application named "Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Shell" from the Windows Start menu. In the command window that opens up run the following set of commands to setup the proxy server settings.

$pwd =ConvertTo-SecureString-StringProxyUserPasswordSet-OBMachineSetting-ProxyServer http://myproxyserver.domain.com -ProxyPort PortNumb – ProxyUserName domain\username -ProxyPassword $pwd
net stop obengine.exe

It's reads as though we should just copy and paste this into the Shell, which, doesn't work. Therefore we assume we must replace some of the fields with information specific to us. The article doesn't specify this however.

Thanks,

Hi,

I am testing ARS for Azure hosted VMs only, and am looking for some information and best practice on the following:

  • Multiple Domain Controller recovery steps

If anyone can enlighten me, or point me in the right direction I would be really grateful,

Azure Blob backup completed with minor exceptions; certain files are skipped

hi guys,

i keep getting this message from our notifications logs for backup for a client of mine. the azure account is setup for remote back for NAS storage onsite.  i really done know much about blobs but i have been reading a lot about it and there are some materials online that talk about lease for blobs and some saying these blobs can be deleted from the container if they don't drop their lease within the lease period, and some advise not to.

what i want to know is what is the implication of deleting blobs and what can be done to stop these exceptions from coming back after backup jobs have been executed?

any help on this is much appreciated

cheers

Cannot register SCDPM 2012 R2 server with Azure Backup

Running MS DPM SCDPM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012 R2. Setup a backup vault in Azure and downloaded the vault credentials. Installed the latest version of the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent. When I run the Azure Backup Registration through the DPM console, it is erroring registering the server. The following message is presented when it fails: The URL configured for the azure backup service is not valid, or the service is currently unavailable.

We do not use proxy for internet access and since the traffic runs over port 80 and 443 site firewall is not the issue. I also tried using different Vault Credentials with no access.

This is present in the CBEngineCurr.errorlog

CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500 - Backup in one day on the other not!

In my company we use the Azure Backup, and it is scheduled to Backup on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. However only backup this Tuesday (02/02/2016) has successfully completed, even thuogh it had given a warning before. Always Completed with Warnings and the same failed file: CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500 "file path". I've updated the Azure agent, but it does not take much to give back to the problem, what would that be?

TKS!

Azure Backup only backed up our Quickbooks file on the first full backup.

I just noticed Azure backup only backed up our Quickbooks data file .QBW on the first full backup. It is not backing it up on the daily backups. My restore date is only from the original first backup.

Some people are going to say have Quickbooks do a backup and back those files up. This is not an option because this is for an accounting firm that has hundreds of Quickbooks data files.

FromRomain Serre @RomSerre via Twitter

Hi, Have you ever had this issue in Azure Backup Vault and VM Azure ? The Snapshot don't want to be taken on two of my Azure VM (a Domain Controller and a SQL Server). The plugin VMSnapshot is well installed but it returns a command failed on Snapshot.

I have one azure vm configured and backing up to the vault.

I just built 4 more azure vms in the same region US East.

When I try to run a discovery it fails. the error is

Failed to discover new items.

Azure really needs quick snap shots for easy rollback like on prem hyperv or VMware have :(  (not the same as backup, but that's what I need right now)

Azure backup error 0x07EF9

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest Azure backup client on it (as of Feb 5th 2016) which is continually failing to back up. I have checked the scratch directory for double backslashes, made sure it has enough space, that the AV is not interfering and tried backing up different data but the backup fails with the same error.

Checking the engine log gives this error (which seems to indicate a communications error, even though the firewall doesn't list any blocked communications from the server when the backup runs.)

Keep getting 0x07ef9 error.

Have checked the forums and tried the resolution points about deactivating AV etc and reinstalling the service.

But still continue to get the same error.

Happy to provide error logs if that helps.

Limitation on upload speed

FromDražen Petrek@dpetrek via Twitter

Hi we are doing  physical server backup to Azure. Maximum network speed while uploading to the cloud we see is 100 Mbps. Is this limitation imposed on Azure? If so, how can this be fixed?

We provided links aka.ms/d943133 and aka.ms/f943133

thank you for your answer. network speed is capped to 100 Mbps. I was wondering is there any kind of network speed cap imposed on Azure side? How could I see what is preventing us to reach speeds better than 100 Mbps?

Thanks,

Windows server backup (WSB) to Azure

$

Hi,
has anyone successfully implemented WSB bare-metal server backup&recovery through two stage process where backup data would first be written to local drives and then in second stage moved to Azure cloud?
So in first stage WSB would create full server image-based bare metal backup to local drives. In second stage, maybe using Windows Azure backup (other ideas?) this data would be sent to the cloud and used in event local drives where local backup files are unaccessible for any reason, or whole server has to be rebuilt from scratch from the cloud.
Not sure this is the right forum to ask since this is multidisciplinary question: it involved both WSB & Azure.

DPM Azure Hyper V Backup of guest SQL / Exchange Server

$

Hi could someone point me in the direction of a 'best practice' when backing up Virtual Servers that run Applications (SQL / Exchange) using DPM and Azure Backup please?

Scenario.

I have created the vault and the DPM server (trial) and have successfully backed up an on site file server.

I now want to backup my Hyper V servers using the same method.

I have registered the Hyper V Host server as a test. And I have also registered the SQL server (hyper V guest) as a test.

I'd like to be able to restore the complete VM and the SQL application to a granular level.

Should I make a protection schedule for the Hyper V guest via the Hyper V host & also create a job that backs up the SQL server via the guest agent installed on the guest VM?

I think this will work but will I be duplicating data that I'm sending to Azure?

Thanks

To backup SQL server databases would it be best to use the Microsoft Azure Backup Agent and select the actual database files, or setup the SQL service to do the backup to azure as this article suggests?

How does Azure backup perform Block level incremental backups

$
0
0

Hi,

I understand Windows Azure Backup Agent performs incremental backups by tracking file and block level changes and only transferring the changed blocks, but my question is how does it track those changes?

The reason I ask is we are using Azure Backup as a off-site backup only, and are still planning on using our current Backup Appliance to backup locally.

I want to make sure that neither backups will conflict with the other, or mark that a file has been backed up on one system, and prevents the changes from being backed up on the second system.

MABS not showing Protected Items in Recovery Services Vault in Azure Portal

$

We installed MABS and have a Vault configured in Recovery Services, but when trying to view Protected Items for Files and Folders the message says:

"You have some protected items associated with System Center - Data Protection Manager servers. We are currently not able to list protected items from these servers."

With MABS we are backing up SQL DB's; Files and Folders; System State for VM's located at Azure.

With DPM server it has its own Vault at Azure and is backing up Servers on-premise. It shows the the Protected Items for Files and Folders.

Is this something that will be fixed in the near future?

Thanks,

Denise
