Can I script Azure restore of backup data (NOT SQL databases, or cloud servers/VMs)

$

Every night we're backing up three files to Azure. We need to restore these files onto an alternate machine in a different physical location the next morning, right now, it's a manual process which involves logging onto Azure and downloading vault credentials then going through the steps in the "Microsoft Azure Backup" application to recover these three files.

Can these steps be scripted through Powershell or some other method? I've seen lots of articles on how to restore VMs (cloud servers) or  SQL databases but none on how to restore simple files that have been backed up.

Assuming I can do this through Powershell, the vault credential only lasts a couple days. Can that be extended or the need to download the credential be eliminated in favor of "certifying" the machine on which the script runs?

Thanks,

Scott

Job completed with warnings - 002.dat file in System Volume Information

Hi There,

We have the latest version of Azure Backup (2.0.9037.0) installed on a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM and are receiving the 'Job completed with warnings' message each time the backup runs.  When viewing the Failed File list, the following is returned:

DATA FAILURE  0x80070020  C:\System Volume Information\002.dat

This file is associated with Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 for Windows (V10.2.4.674).

Given that this file resides in the System Volume Information folder it is unable to be added the Exclusions list.

How can we exclude this file or resolve this issue?

Thanks, Phil.

Linux azure backup has started failing

Hi,

I have a number of VMs, all created from the openlogic Centos 6.7 release. I have has a classic backup vault configured which has been running well until recently.

Since June 8th some of my backups have started failing (I believe those where the server has been rebooted or waagent restarted).

The complaint in the portal is an exclamation mark with the Take Snapshot. Backups always fail around 41-42 minutes after starting. This now affects about 4 out of 6 VMs.

My version of waagent is 2.0.18. I have enabled verbose logging and although there is a lot of chatter, there are no errors being reported. I notice that some automatic updates have been applied, but these don't tie up with the dates of the service failing.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening.

Within the new Azure RMS portal, how and what rights do I need to give for our backup admins to only view Recovery Services Vaults?

If a new role needs to be created, can I have the JSON file?

Backups faiing

I have installed the MS Azure recovery services on 2 servers.

For testing on my own Server 2008 R2 Std. this works perfectly.

Backing up without any problems.

For my client on his SBS 2008, I get a constant failures.

Data size of backup is 140Gb over a 5Mb Fibre line. There is double the amount of disk space available for the scratch location.

I used this website https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/backup-configure-vault/ for the instructions on how to set it up.

Am I missing something on sbs that is preventing the backups?

Backup Files to Az VM. What option do I choose?

From @Sergmis via Twitter:

Need to bckup files located on Az vm. Want to use Az Bckup Agent. Do we select on-premises for backup goal? counterintuitive. The article is clear about backing up files located on premise to RS Vault.  I need to know if wrks backing up files on Az VM.

Thanks!

Failed to set the encryption key for secure backups

$

I have 3 vm's where I have created a selfsigned certificate, and uploaded it to the backup vault. 2 of the servers register without any issues, and backup works as intended. But the last server(2012) fails when registering the server With Azure backup. It finds the backup vault without any issues, but fails at the last part(Server Registration).

"Failed to set the encryption key for secure backups.

Activation did not succeed completly but the encryption passphrase was saved to the follwing file: ..

The current operation failed due to an internal service error [0x1FBD2]."

I have tried several times to delete the certificate and recreate it and uploading it again, not sure why it is failing. Can't seem to find any info in the event log either.

Any thoughts?

Azure Backup - Failed to apply KB3119587

Hello,

My problem is the following.

I have created an offline Azure Backup.

I have exported data on disk using WAimportExport service.

My backup file is now copied in my Azure storage blob and my disk is back. Perfect.

But when creating this first offline backup I made an error when I copied the Azure import task name (KB3119587).

So I have created a new offline backup policy has described in KB3119587. My data has been correctly backup to a new file in a staging folder on premise.

But after that the first synchronisation fails because the file name in Azure blob (created by first offline backup) doesn't match the file name in my staging folder (created by second offline backup).

Is there somebody who can help me ?

Is there a way to calculate the used space by backup on premises to know how much space will be used on Backup Vault?

Some files are missing for recovery

$

Good day.

I have some problem with Azure Backup service running on Windows Server 2012 in production.

The state is: we have a server which has a role of Domain Controller (among others) and installed Windows Server Backup Features (with "VSS Copy" setting enabled for backups). Also recently we have installed Microsoft Azure Recovery Services agent and set it up to make Files\Folder backup to the cloud vault.

First backup to Azure cloud seems to be fine, but second and further attempts have some files missing (backup archives for accounting dept) and of course it is critically important for us to keep those archives in cloud for restore purposes.  I do have Azure logs, but they are really huge.

Could you please assist us in troubleshooting this issue?

Installed Azure Backup Server but can't add disk

I got Azure Backup Server installed. Now I'm trying to add a disk and nothing displays in the available disks section. The server has two drives. I think I read somewhere that you can't add disks that have operating system installed or azure backup installed. So my C drive has windows and I installed azure backup on D drive. Is this why I can't add a disk?

What is an ideal configuration for azure backup? Shall I set a drive aside just for backups? Can I choose a folder in a drive for backups?

CBEngine.exe continually crashing - Faulting module name: ntdll.dll

Hi there,

We have the Azure Recovery Agent installed (version 2.0.9037.0) on DPM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 10 (version 4.2.1473.0).

It is backing up various items and most jobs back up fine, but there is one that keeps failing. When it does fail this is recorded in the Application event log:

Faulting application name: cbengine.exe, version: 2.0.9037.0, time stamp: 0x57346097
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.3.9600.18233, time stamp: 0x56bb4ebb
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00000000000944c0
Faulting process id: 0xd88
Faulting application start time: 0x01d1d941a5d3dc4e
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\bin\cbengine.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
Report Id: f550eb59-4537-11e6-80c9-a4bf01008d5d
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

I've manually created a short term disk backup to ensure that the local copy was up to date before creating an online recovery point, but that didn't help.

I've completely updated the DPM and source servers, restarted servers, re-installed the recovery agent, moved the scratch location (which is on a dedicated drive) but none of these things have helped. I've run sfc /scannow as well.

What should I try next? Thanks.

It's a question about duration of retention of a backup.Duration of retention of a fixed period backup is recognition that I depend on a policy. The duration of retention which will be a backup right now, without time limits?

Backup suddenly failing with internal error

We have a backup vault with 18 azure vm's registered to it, to backup some folders on each machine every night. This has been running fine for months now, with the occasional update of the backup agent.

Now, since yesterday night, the backup on 14 servers is failing with the message:
Microsoft Azure Backup encountered an internal error. Wait for a few minutes and then try the operation again. If the issue persist, please contact Microsoft Support (0x1FBD1)

What I've tried
-a manual backup: this failes with the same error code
- restarted one of the servers, and tried a manual backup; also failes
- created a new backup vault, unregistered one of the servers and tried registering it to the new backup vault. This takes a very long time, more then usual when setting up the backup, and then failes trying to set the encryption keys.

Last night all backups failed again, except for the same 4 that have succeeded.
Does anyone have a tip what to do or what to look for?

Azure Backup - Fails Vault Credentials

Hello,

There have been a lot of post regarding this issue, usually addressed by using the newer version of the program, or changing the date/time to be more accurate.

I have the exact same error on a particular "Trouble server", but somehow, there is another cause.

Date and time settings are all correct. I can register a different server or PC with the same vault credentials that fail on the "trouble server".

Currently, I have attempted..

change time zones, reboot, change back, reboot. no change.

Change time and time zones, reboot, change back, reboot again.  no change.

Uninstalled Azure backup software, change data and time, reboot, change date and time back, reboot, reinstall software. no change.

removed backup vault, uninstalled software, unregistered server. rebuilt backupvault, reinstalled software. no change.

I have even looked into the certificate store to see if there were old credentials stored from old attempted installs. - there were not.

I am getting to my wits end with this issue, as I cant find any further support for this other than, change date/time.

This is the exact error it give me on failure

"Invalid vault credentials provided. The file is either corrupted or does not have the latest credentials associated with recovery service. (ID: 34513)

We recommend you download a new vault credentials file from the portal and use it within 2 days."

ADDITONAL INFORMATION.

This server was registered for backup before. but I had to change backup vaults.

everything was fine, server was remove, and vault deleted.

when I attempted to re-register the server, for the first time on the new backup vault..

I clicked on "Register server" and the whole backup program hung. indefinitely.

I had to crash the program, and it never worked properly again, even after many reinstalls.

MS Azure backup failing to backup new versions of files

$

We are using MS Azure Backup to backup our files from a specific folder on a local disk to an Azure backup service however it is not updating the cloud version of some files when they have been updated locally.

The errlog has recorded a number of the following errors
Failed: Hr: = [0x80070005] : CreateFile failed \\?\Volume{...}\<file path> with error :5

More worryingly the jobs in question on the jobs list show successful with no indication of any issues.
I only discovered this because 1 job from 3 days ago was tagged as having warning which appears to be a connectivity issue somewhere and came across these entries in the log.

Would someone be able to

1. Indicate how we can get these changed files to be backed up?
2. Answer why the MS Azure Backup jobs are listed as successful when these warnings have been recorded?

Thanks
Gavin
