DPM on Azure VM Backing up on-site servers?

$

Hello,

I have read the technet that says it seems as if it's not supported? Is this the case, can we not just backup the last of our on-prem servers directly to DPM running on an Azure VM?

Or if someone has an alternative? We would rather not deploy any more hardware.

Hi everyone,

I'm getting this error using azure backup services on a few servers. I've waited a few days and still get the same message: The activation did not complete successfully. Operation is blocked as you have reached the limit on number of operations permitted in 24 hours. Contact Microsoft Support or retry after 24 hours.

Azure Agent job stuck "Preparing storage..." forever

$

Recently had a server using Azure Backup for months, but disk space ran short on the C:, the unfortunate default location for the cache. Followed the suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling using a new path for the Cache, and the install went fine.

BUT, any attempt at running a backup job gets stuck at an early step of "Preparing storage..." forever (I've only let it sit there for an hour, not building any data in the Cache or continuing).  Canceling doesn't happen cleanly either, have to stop the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent service, which crashes the job and GUI.

Also can't completely clear out the old Cache location from the C: drive since it claims the temporary .vhd files are "in use" by the System.

Any suggestions would be appreciated since I really don't want to have to completely wipe out existing backed up data in order to really startover (continue was my hope) using Azure Backup or switch to something else.

Small environment so it isn't worth the cost of paying for support, since support isn't included.

Cannot access Azure VM image from Azure

I have been successfully performing backup of my Azure VM to Azure Backup for some time.

Today, I accidently deleted my VM.

No problem, I restored from backup and everything seems to have restored Ok.

The only problem is I seem to have lost all my backup history for that machine - even though the vault says that I am still consuming 260Gb.

How do I access these backups if I need them?

During installation of Azure Backup, it asked for the SQL server installation media

During the installation of Azure Backup, it required the installation of SQL server.

Since the server to be backup is the Domain Controller, I have to manually login using the DPMSQLSvcsAcct account to the DC server to manually install the SQL server.  And it asked for the SQL server installation media which I don't have.

Am I doing it wrong?  Did I missed any steps?

Please advise.

Hi Everyone,

Azure Backup use Microsoft Azure Backup agent, it use two tasks for launch backup  :

1. Task Backup

2. Resume Backup

I'm suprise to see that task backup didn't works, because Import-Module MSOnlineBackup is not installed, but it is not possible to install.

Error message :

This module was not loaded, because no valid module found.

The only one solution is to launch by GUI interface backup, not friendly.

Azure backup failed with below reason.

Error Details :

STATUS
Failed
DETAILS
VM Name 1XXXXXXX
ERROR DETAILS
Could not perform the operation as VM no longer exists.Copy
Stop protecting virtual machine without deleting backup data. More details at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=808124

Contacted MS, below is the response.

and it is communication error.  You can try to fix it by deleting the vm snapshot extension and then click backup now – this will reinstall the extension. If this doesn’t work, you will need to open a new case

In the NEW portal, go to the vm – Settings – Extensions – right click the ellipsis  and delete.

BUT I COULD NOT SEE HIGHLIGHTED EXTENSION ON MY VM, SO I HAVE TRIED TO ADD STILL NO LUCK I COULD NOT SEE IN EXTENSTION LIST.

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!

Azure VM restore - availability set not "restored"

$

Hello everybody,

I've been attending the MS20533c course but no material seems to mention it and the trainer doesn't know it.

We've been backing up the VMs in order to understand the restore process. The VM I restored is a Windows VM member of an availability set together with other Vmachines of the same type.

The VM, storage account and the resource group are all located in the same region: "West EU" but when I restore the VM, this is properly restored but it is not member of the availability set anymore.
Now, I'd actually need the machine to be member of the availability set to have the Azure sla of 99,95% of availability respected but I am not able to do it, event trying to add it later in, the message reads:

"The availability set can only be configured when creating a virtual machine. You must recreate the virtual machine to move it in or out of an availability set."

Accordingly to this article I should be able to do it instead: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-windows-classic-configure-availability/

it would be rwally sad not to be able to restore tha availability set settings especially when the VMs I'll be working on are production machines.

Can you please explain how it actually works?

many thanks for your help

Stefano

Other Backup Options?

Good Day.

Is Azure's method of VM backup the best option available?

I have been doing some research on other methods of creating a backup for Azure Virtual machines. Are there any other third party cloud services which integrate with Azure, that will allow me to create a backup of my VMs and store on their cloud?

Alternate methods for backing up BitLocker-encrypted VM?

I have a VM that uses Azure Disk Encryption to provide BitLocker encryption to the OS and Data disks.    Unfortunately, Azure Backup does not yet support this configuration.

Can someone recommend alternate methods for backing up a BitLocker-encrypted VM?   I haven't been able to find any other solutions (MS or 3rd party).

Thanks.

Backup service is under maintenance, the operation will not complete now.

Retry the operation after some time. If the problem persists, please contact Microsoft Support for assistance.

Microsoft Azure Backup Server - Local Disk

Is it possible to use Microsoft Azure Backup Server to backup VM's directly to Azure or is local storage needed?

If local storage is needed how short can the local protection be? I want to avoid having to buy to much local storage and make sure all data is in Azure long term.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

How to setup an Azure Hybrid Cloud for Backup?

I understand the Azure has a service/solution for Backup. What is the simplest way to implement this? Ideally, this would be created as a test environment for migrating an existing server and the database that connects to it.

Am not sure if I need to use a VM to replicate the current environment to test how it works. Though, I would like try the Backup setup before actually fully implementing it.

Microsoft Azure Backup fails after Windows 7 to 10 update

$

I've been using Azure Backup for more than a year to backup my home Computers including Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. Everything has been just fine until the last Windows 7 Computer was updated to Windows 10.

The Computer already had Azure Backup installed and scheduled for daily execution when I started Windows 10 update. After update changes can't be done through "Schedule Backup" and manual backups started from "Back Up Now" fail also. On both cases I get error "An internal error prevented the modification of the backup policy". Restore still works.

If I try to use "Schedule Backup" and select "Stop this backup schedule..." it goes through without errors and backup client no longer shows the schedule info on Microsoft Azure Backup main screen. If I then go back to "Schedule Backup" and try to Re-enable backup schedule with same or modified settings, I get the error below.

"The backup policy could not be modified.
Error: An internal error prevented the modification of the backup policy.  An internal error prevented the modification of the backup policy."

If I close backup client after the error and then restart it, I can see the schedule information on main screen as if schedule is really enabled, but when I look at Task Scheduler -> Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> OnlineBackup, there are no jobs on that folder. On my other Computers I can see the scheduled backups in this folder.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Azure Backup, but that didn't change anything. Any help to resolve this is much appreciated.
