Why does Azure backup report CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500 E:\ServerFolders\Company\... ?

I see a number of failures like this on our Azure backups in the failed file list. Not frequent, maybe twice a week at most for any one site, and only up to one or two sites on any one day.

Searching has found little by way of explanation, though enough occurrences going back to 2013 to realise I am not the first to see this.
