Azure Backup Agent + Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

This is the worst products I have ever tried or tested. Everything FAILS and just don't work. It's been a 7+ days I can't take any backups.

All sort of issues happens during backups of Windows 2012 R2. The TOTAL STORAGE CONSUMED IN AZURE shows some files, but non recovery points are available. it's unpredictable and buggy.

We have 3 x 1.2TB volumes to backup, none of the volumes ever finished... Log files is confusing and intuitive.

I tied to backup a simple 300 volume, guess what with 100MB it takes 24h+ and never finishes.

Those the question, guys, did any of you managed to get this work?!

It's a trial to see how this may work for us, we want to use site recovery feature as well, but because it's a trial we aren't eligible to any sort of support. So how in a name of God can we evaluate the product properly ?!

Edit1.
Bandwidth Throttling option and no Proxy server.

Retention Policy With PowerShell

I am currently trying to set a retention policy for scheduled backup with Azure Backup via PowerShell. I can easily create a new retention policy for every backup with the New-OBRetentionPolicy cmdlet.

The problem is that I can't find any way for daily, monthly and yearly retention as seen in Microsoft Azure Backup Agent. Is there any way to do it with PowerShell?

Getting The Size Of A Backup

I am currently writing a PowerShell script which looks for servers on an Azure Backup Vault. I am in need of estimating the size of every backup sent, but sadly haven’t found an efficient way to do it. As the directory doesn’t have a value for their ItemSize property, I need to get accumulate the size of every file in the backup.

I am currently browsing each file individually by browsing them with: New-OBPagingContext | Get-OBRecoverableItem –ParentItem $parentItem I then add the size of every file.

The problem is that it is super inefficient and takes hours for small volumes. I also found out that I can use this: $allFiles = Get-OBRecoverableItem –SearchString “*” –Location “C:\” –RecoveryPoint $parentItem to find every file, but the cmdlet seems to max out after finding 2000 files which isn’t helping at all. However, this method is infinitely faster and gives a result within seconds.

Is there any way to bypass the limit of 2000 items or any other way of estimating the size of a backup?

Unable to remove Recovery service BackupVault

I am unable to remove a Backupvault because there is still a registered item in it. However, when i look to registered item, it tells me "you haven't registered any item yet". When I select dashboard it says 1 windows server registered.

I must admit that I manualy registered a VM with the certificate.

Important detail: the Vault and the VM's are not in the same region!!

Recovery service freeze during linux vm snapshot

We are using Recovery Services to backup a Centos Linux VM and every two days the Recovery Service Jobs hangs running the "Take Snapshot" sub task with error details "Could not communicate with the VM agent for snapshot status. Snapshot VM sub task timed out".  The VM state is "running" but all access paths are blocked (no ssh, http, ..). So we must restart the VM to restore usual services.

On the first night after the restart the Backup Job runs without troubles. On the second night the VM freeze. We are not able to find any error messages in the log files (Linux and Azure).

Here is the last message in extension.log:

Azure backup in Preview Portal?

$

How do you go about accessing the backup vault in the Preview Portal? The issue I have is in the standard portal I have deleted a VM that had a backup policy assigned to it. I now want to revert my BackupVault to Local replication rather than GeoReplication. I wanted to delete the vault but each time I try it says I must unregister my VM from the vault. Well from within the Register tab in the standard portal I have nothing visible. Equally I have nothing visible under protection.  Therefore I 'should' be able to delete my backup vault but for that reason I cannot.

Can anyone help?  Can the deletion of the backup vault be done using powershell?

Backup Encryption

Greetings,

I have installed the agent and registered the server to Azure Backup.
During the process, I have also setup the key phrase and the backup process is completed without any issue.

Question is, how do I verify the files/folders are encrypted before transmitting over to Azure?

Waiting for Azure Import Job to complete

I keep getting the message "Waiting for Azure Import Job to complete. Please check on Azure management portal for more information job status".

This is an Azure Backup job where I performed an Offline Backup. I successfully created an external drive using WAImportExport, shipped it to Microsoft and I can see my data in my storage container. However, the Azure Backup Agent won't move past this message.

I'm new to Azure Backup and my understanding is that once the Agent can see the data in the Storage container within Azure (the container I listed when I performed the Offline Backup), it will move this data to the appropriate backup account.

I followed instructions at this location (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/backup-azure-backup-import-export/) and at the bottom all it ways is this:

"Once the initial backup data is available in your storage account, the Azure Backup agent copies the contents of the data from this account to the multi-tenanted backup storage account. In the next schedule backup time, the Azure Backup agent performs the incremental backup over the initial backup copy."

I've manually run the backup several times and it always comes back with the "Waiting..." message.

Where should I look to determine why this process isn't completing?

Thank you.

Azure Online Backup - Error CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500

Hello All,

I´m starting with Azure Online Backup. It´s a great tool !

But, on my first large backup, about 850 files were not backuped to Azure, generating warnings.
Error log for every file is:
CATALOG FAILURE  0x80131500  C:\DADOS\A7\A786\caspol.txt

I can view the content of this file accessing by Windows Explorer, so i think its not permission.
Most of the files were copied, only 850 files with this warning.

Interesting: I have Windows Server Backup running the same Schedule Backup as Azure. In Windows Server Backup everything is copied to a dedicated backup hard disk!

Anyone has an idea why this happening ?

Thanks.

Patrick

Azure Backup on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard fails to back up thousands of files with CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500

We have installed and are using Azure Backup on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and a Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard (which is based upon the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard kernel). Both servers complete scheduled Azure Backup jobs, but every job lists thousands upon thousands of failed files. The failed file list reports each failed file as a CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500. Both servers have the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent version 2.0.8692.0 installed.

I have attempted to install the update https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2854994, but the update fails stating "The program being upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch updates a different version of the program."

I have installed the update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2997692, which after running the update states "Microsoft Azure Recover Services Agent is installed and registered".

I have attempted to install the update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2816671, but after launching the downloaded Upgrade.exe, it simple exits without any confirmation that the update succeeded or failed.

After the three updates attempts listed above, the problem is unchanged. I'm happy to share any log files; just tell me what you need to diagnose and correct this problem.

In the mean time, I've requested that Azure billing be aware we don't want to pay for a service that doesn't work, yet we need to keep using it to resolve this problem. I've been told I'll need Microsoft Technical Support to provide documentation that there was a problem, and if it turns out to be something that Microsoft had to fix. That way, we can get credit for the cost to use the Azure Backup service while it doesn't work properly.

Backup Not Executed at Schedule Timing

Hi,

I have configured the Azure Backup Agent to run daily at 0500am.
However, I noticed that the task was not executed automatically at the schedule timing.

Did not see any error message in Azure Backup or in Windows Events Viewer.
What could be the reason behind?

Azure - Engine Encountered an unexpected error. Server 2012 R2 Up to date.

I have a backup scheduled to start at 6:30PM.  I logged in last night around 11PM and noticed everything seemed to be going well and it said it had already uploaded somewhere around 150GB on 2 drives.

I check in the morning and it says.  "Engine encountered an unexpected error.  Please look at the event logs for more detail..." I check the event logs and there isn't anything I can find related.  Not only this but I double click on the 6:30PM Backup and it says nothing was uploaded.  I know my network bandwidth strongly disagrees with that.

Also another backup randomly starts at 9:37-9:39AM.  This is starting to piss me off, never once was a backup scheduled to run during office hours and triple checking I confirmed, nothing is scheduled to run at this time.  I have no idea whats up does anyone have any recommendations?

File or folder was not accessible

Hi everybody,

I'm a new user of Azure backup.

After the setup, the system has ran properly. Unfortunately, since yesterday, I have been impacted by an error message saying some files or folder are not accessible and the backup job stopped.

Having issue with some files is common for all backup systems. I would like to know if it's possible to configure the system to skip the files or folder that are doing some errors.

Thanks for your help.

Azure backup failure

I am running Azure backup  version 2.0.8707.0 on a Windows 2012 server.   The server has all the current updates.   I installed the backup earlier this week under the 30 day trial.   Each backup is showing a list of files with the following Catalog Failure 0x80131500.  I researched the error but all I can find relates to a patch that won't install because it says it's for a different version.    The restore option does not list the files that have been backed up.   However I ran a test restore and the files were copied back so I know the backup is copying the files.   I've got about 3 weeks left on the trial version and would like to get this resolved.  This is a very good backup solution and I am planning to deploy it more after I get past this issue.   I appreciate any help.

Azure BackUP&Restore - CentOS

Dear Team,

I am struggling with Azure BackUp feature, which is in Preview. The machine we are testing is a CentOS vm. The Backup configuration, registration, protection and the Backup procedure are correct.

The problem come out when we try to restore. During setup of the Restore instance ,  just a single storage account appears within that list, we cannot choose the same storage account that has been configured during the CentOS VM creation,it disappeared. Furthermore, the Cloud Service name, we have used for CentOS VM, does not appear neither.

Every "Azure BackUP/Restore" support will be appreciated.

Thank a lot in advance.
