Azure backups not Executing to schedule, no logs or failures.

Hi,

I'm backing up 15 servers to Azure mostly with no problem. Two of the servers are failing to initiate a backup to the schedule I've set.

Backups are set to run 3 times a day at 9am, 12:30pm and 6PM. in the Azure backup agent I see no entries for attempts for a backup even starting. Windows event logs show no failure, errors or attempts.

The scheduled task that should kick off the backup is running at the correct times succesfully, however the backup never takes place.

If I run an on demand backup (backup now) this succeeds with no problems.

Also I've run the following command as many people appear to have had their issues resolved with this "set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted"

any help appreciated

MARS: about Backup completed with warnings and portal Backup alerts

$

Configured MARS on a Desktop W10 Pro to backup only user's Document folder. Daily backup is running once a day, did some restores manually and checked everything is saved correctly, although every backup terminates with warnings, this is the detail I get:

DATA FAILURE        0x80070020     C:\System Volume Information\klmeta.dat

I have two questions:

1. I'm guessing klmeta.dat is something about Kaspersky Internet Security...does anyone have suggestions to avoid this? It's in the system volume information but I'm saving only user's Document folder.

2. On the portal, under the "Backup Alerts" blade, I enabled and configured the new notification option to send me a mail alert for Critical and Warning events, but "Backup Alerts" list is always empty thus no mail coming, although I can see, in the "Backup jobs" blade every job with status Completed with warnings

Am I missing something? there's some more configuration options to be enabled to receive a mail alert?

EDIT: ABOUT POINT 2. Sorry ! I missed theEnroll your subscription for the preview release section reported in the announcement (right now MABAlertingFeature status is stil reported as Registering )

I keep my question open to see if someone can help about point 1.

Thanks

Problems with Recovery vault

Hi,

I have create a recovery vault (with the NEW portal).

All wents well and I made 2 backups. Than I made some changes to the VM (update to a newer version) and also change the Size of the VM to a smaller one.

I have finished my work and want to do another backup.

Now I get every time when I click on "Backup now" the failure message that triggering the backup fails. Also when I click on restore, I have an empty list and the before done 2 backups are not available.

So I decided to delete the vault and recreate it.

When I want to delete the vault I get the error that there are still registered server, I need to remove. But how to remove a registered server on the NEW portal? When I login to the old portal than I can see the recovery vault.

Has this issue somewhere before as well? Has it something to do with the size change?

Any Idea how I can solve the issue?

Thanks in advance.

Synchronrise online backup with initial offline seed using waimportexport

We created an import job using waimportexport.  The data has been uploaded to our Azure account and sits in a storage container online.

How do we now start backing up our server to Azure such that it syncs with this offline seed we sent and just down incremental backups?

Azure Backup Restoration

Azure ASR & File Backup

Hi There,

I am currently setting up Backup and ASR for a client.

File & Foler Backups have been configured and running successfully, i've since set up ASR for a number of servers. Since setting up ASR (which is in sync and protected) backups have been failing with the following error -

"Backup could not be started because of virtual hard drive named NO_PARAM Ensure that scratch space configured for backup is located in an unencrypted and uncompressed folder. Restart Virtual Disk service and retry backup operation. (0x086C5)"

I'm seeing this on all servers that are protected with ASR, those without are backing up fine. It looks like ASR is potentially locking the files needed when backing up.

Has anyone seen this previously or aware of a solution for this issue?

Thanks,

Rob.

Azure Backup Vault Creation (Bug Report)

Sometimes, when I try to create an Azure Backup Vault I go though the process, and select the subscription I want to use. I wait for the deployment to go through, and then after a few minutes my vault has been created.... in the wrong subscription. Thinking perhaps I made a typo, I delete the vault and create  it again. Alas, it still goes in the wrong subscription.

Not all vaults I create have this issue, but for some subscriptions, I have been stuck on this bug for days.

A Fatal Error Occurred During Snapin Operation

I use Azure Backup to back up my wife's Windows 10 laptop to a recovery services vault in Azure (classic, because ARM wasn't available when this was set up). If I look in Azure, I can see the protected instance but if I fire up Microsoft Azure Backup on the PC, it fails to load and the error message says:

A fatal error occurred during Microsoft Azure Backup Snapin operation.
Error details: System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Timeout has expired and the operation has not been completed

[...]

Please close the Microsoft Azure Backup Snapin and restart it.

I've restarted the machine but the same error occurs?

This was working last time I checked but the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\Temp folder has a load of .crash files...

Please can someone help? Thanks, Mark

Will Azure Backup work on an SBS2011

Hello,

Can anyone clarify if Azure Backup will work on SBS2011?

I've read on various sites that Azure Backup requires a later version of powershell than the one that is installed on SBS.  And that updating powershell on SBS2011 may break things.

Kind Regards,

How is protected instance calculated in Azure?

If my laptop's hard disk is 500 GB & data residing in it is 60 GB is it considered in the 2nd category?

(a) I want to take back-up of 10 GB out of 60 GB data I have. What category of protected instance does it fall in (1st or 2nd)

(b) If over a period of time, incremental data adds up & grows beyond 50 GB, will the instance size move to the 2nd category

Azure Server Backup online slow and fails

Azure server backup online to azure will fail with volumes containing large amounts of files. Local backup to disk is working well for all volumes. The online backup job for the affected large volume will gets to a particular point and then stop. It is different everytime. there are no errors in event viewer as the job never officially fails. The job will then run for days transferring no data, DPRMA service is not started and no data being transferred across the network.

Links are more than capable(100mbx100mb) and the gateway/firewall has exclusions and the logs are clear from errors. No local antivirus running on Azure server backup VM. All other cloud backups complete for all other volumes without any issues. When I bring the file count on the affected volume down to around 700-900K files, then the online cloud backup will finish properly. I am unsure if it is related to file number or size?

Environment is Server 2012 R2 hyperV host. Running on the host is 7 server 2012 R2 VM's with different workloads. Azure server backup is installed within one of the VM's running on a Server 2012 R2. Agent's are installed within Each domain joined VM.

Azure Agent Back Up Completed with Warning

Hi,

I noticed that after upgrading to the latest agent, the job frequently completed with warning.
Is there a way I could find out what exactly the warning is all about and I assumed the backup has no issue?

See the screenshot.

Cancelled Backups still showing as in-progress in Azure Portal

$

Hi There,

I have an issue with a couple of file backups which have run into problems. I have cancelled the backups on the servers using the Azure Backup Agent which are reporting as cancelled as of last night.

I can see that the backup jobs are still showing in the portal as in-progress (running for over 20hours) although there is no backup running.

Scheduled backups that were meant to run last night could not as another backup was running. I can't find a way of cancelling the running jobs in the portal is there a way of doing this? Or any other solution?

Thanks,

Rob.

"Job failed because another backup job was in progress"

I'm using Azure Backup on my Windows 10 Surface Book. My backups are configured to run twice daily: at 7am and 7pm. Almost always, when my backup starts, 2 jobs will start at the same time. One will complete successfully and the other will immediately fail with the error "Job failed because another backup job was in progress".

Any ideas why 2 jobs are trying start at the same time?

Protected Instance Pricing - A Straight answer..PLEASE!

$

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could please give me a straight answer in regards to Azure Backup utilising Azure Backup Server.

I'm struggling to get any response out of Azure support, Microsoft Partner support don't want to know because it includes the word 'Azure' and everything I read seems to conflict with other information ive read.

I really don't think the 'protected instances' information is that clear and this is what I'm struggling with the most, below is the scenario for which I need to give my customer an estimated price for:

Physical Server 1:

Need to back up the following:

C: 90GB
D: 250GB
Bare Metal / System State

Physical Server 2:

C: 45GB
D: 95GB
H: 100GB
Bare Metal / System State

This server also runs SQL and therefore we want granular SQL restore of 1 database sized 20GB.

I fully understand the pricing brackets of protected instances but have little understanding of what a protected instance is.

Can anyone tell me how many protected instances this equals? Is it one per volume, one for SQL and one per server? Or 1 per server and 1 for SQL? or 1 per server, 1 per volume, 1 per bare metal/system state and 1 for SQL?

I think this really needs some clarity in the documentation.

Ive also seen conflicting information regarding whether you do or don't get charged for data egress on restores, if someone could help here as well that would be great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

No backup alerts from Azure Backup

I have configured two separate Azure Backup instances with email notifications but I never get an email with any of the three notifications that I have it configured to send. Below is how my email notifications are configured (email blurred). I have since added a second email address to the notifications but so far I haven't got notifications to that email address either.

What email address do the notifications come from? Is there other configuration that I need to do somewhere to make this work??

Azure restore wizzard with 0KB files

Dear support,

We needed to recover a file using azure recovery. We have started the wizzard and along the way we saw files indicated with 0KB file size. When we restored that file, the file was OK and something like 350KB. We saw several files with 0 (zero) KB. That alone we didn't like because we are not sure the files are OK.

Anyone have the same problem?

Kind regards

Overwritten SQL Backup not updated

$

Hello,

we are using azure backup to backup our SQL backup files to the cloud, the SQL backup files are generated by the Application (SAP) and the backup will overwriting the existing backup file, so the backup flow we use is

1. SAP generates a Backup file with a static name to a local disk

2. The backup file is copied to another server using robocopy (scripted) where the azure backup agent is installed, robocopy overwrites the files on the backup server if file is newer

3. server with Azure Backup Agent installed will backup the files to the cloud

the initial backup is successfully done, but the subsequent backups shows minimal data backup around the size of 2 -3 GB even though the full backup of the file is 20 GB and 40 GB, I was expecting the backup will be the full size

I tried restoring one of the full backup file and the backup date shown when restoring in from SQL server is not updated which I took to mean the subsequent backup did not update the full backup file even though the backup file itself is already overwritten

is this expected behaviour ?
